India Bans Import of CDMA Mobile without Unique Number

IANS

New Delhi, Oct 23: India has banned the import of CDMA mobile phones that do not have the unique serial number that enables tracking users.

"Import of CDMA mobile phones without Electronic Serial Number(ESN), Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) or with all zeroes as ESN/MEID is prohibited with immediate effect," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification Friday.

In June India had banned the import of GSM mobile phones that did not have the unique international mobile equipment identity number after concerns were raised over usage of such phones by terrorists.
