M'lore: Football Tourney Honours Former SAC Physical Director Benjamin D’Souza

Mangalore, Oct 27: A football tournament in memory of Benjamin D’Souza, sports patron and former physical director of St Aloysius College, was inaugurated at the football ground at Nehru Maidan on Monday October 26.
The memorial tournament called ‘Invitation League’ was inaugurated by Fr Sweebert D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius College.
He said, “Late Benjamin D’Souza’s role in identifying sports and games talent at St Aloysius College is remarkable. He moulded the best personalities in the field and was successful in his effort as many students excelled in their careers through sports and games in the college”.
D M Aslam, president of Dakshina Kannada Football Association (DKFA), presiding over the inaugural of the tournament said, “Benjamin D’Souza loved sports and games and considered the playground a religious place. He was involved in the making of sports personalities and gave a lot to the field. Being a lover of hockey and football, his efforts in popularizing such games are still encouraging others”.
“The tournament is being organized to honour Benjamin D’Souza and after the tournament, a state-level team of 30 members will be formed after selection of the best players”, he added.
The league tournament will end on Tuesday November 10 with the super league. There are 8 teams participating in this tourney which have been selected from the Independence Cup tournament held in August.
Rolphie Mascarenhas, Director Kanachur Academy of Liberal Education , Santhosh D’Souza, son of Benjamin D’Souza, and office-bearers of DKFA were present.
