Mangalore, Oct 28: A gang of armed dacoits entered a house located in Hosabettu near Suratkal in the wee hours on Wednesday October 28, and decamped with valuables and a car totally worth about Rs 15 lac, after tying up the family members.
The gang forcibly took away three lac rupees in cash and gold ornaments worth about four lac rupees by opening two almirahs found in the house, besides a Honda City car.
The gang struck at a house located in the residential extension located adjacent to Navagiri Marriage Hall of Hosabettu at about 3 am today, by smashing two doors that had blocked their entry from the rear side. After gaining entry into the house owned by Subhaschandra Shetty, they woke up the family members and tied all the five family members up with the help of a sari found in the house. After robbing cash, valuables and the mobile phone of Shetty, they escaped in the white Honda City car parked in front of the house.
The entire operation took less than 30 minutes. The wife of Shetty, who could somehow break free from the knot, released the others, thereafter. The family members said that the robbers knew Kannada but took care to converse only in Hindi. The fact that Shetty had drawn money on Tuesday, and that the robbers had specifically targetted his home on that day, gives an indication that they were aware of his movements.
Shetty, a NITK contractor and former Rotary president, is involved with various organizations. He is a popular donor too.
Although Shetty alerted the police control room, and barricades were set up at strategic points immediately thereafter, the thieves somehow succeeded in escaping. Panambur deputy superintendent of police Girish, Suratkal police inspector K U Belliappa, sub-inspector Ramesh and other personnel visited the house and took up investigation.
