Goa has not lost on Mahadayi issue, case is still before SC: BJP

Panaji, Feb 21: BJP on Friday rubbished the contentions that Goa has lost its case before Supreme Court in Mahadayi Water Dispute matter after top court notifies the award given by Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal. BJP Goa General Secretary Narendra Sawaikar said that the opposition parties were jumping to the gun and trying to politicize the issue, spreading the lies.

Sawaikar said that though the court has notified the award given by tribunal, it has also admitted the appeal made by Goa government against the award fixing the next date for hearing in July 2020.

“Notification of the award is a part of the procedure, which has been adopted by SC. But that does not mean, Karnataka has won and Goa has lost,” he said.

The BJP leader said that the comment on the issue can be made only after SC gives its final verdict.

Sawaikar said that in the meantime the contempt petition filed by Goa government against Karnataka for going ahead with the work on the project on Mahadayi pending appeal will be heard by the SC.

The opposition parties in Goa on Thursday had slammed BJP government for failing to protect interests of River Mahadayi after Supreme Court’s interim order on Thursday allowed Karnataka government’s plea for implementation of the final award by a tribunal for sharing water from the river.
