Ajman, Feb 22: The 19th annual inter-university sports festival of Gulf Medical University (GMU), here, concluded with the grand awards ceremony on February 20.
Prof Manda Venkatramana, vice-chancellor – Academics, GMU, was the chief guest of the closing ceremony, held in the presence of members of the academic leadership team of GMU, faculty/staff members and students from various colleges.
The event officially kick-started at GMU’s new turf ground on February 15, with an opening ceremony which included a colourful march past, captains’ arm-band ceremony, flame lighting ceremony and the unveiling of the championship trophy. This year’s edition saw a record number of institutions participating, with around 300 events across 12 categories. Two new categories were added to the competitions.
Over 1000 students from 30 universities/colleges in the UAE competed in football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, badminton, throwball, squash, swimming, chess and arm-wrestling. The winners and runners-up were presented with trophies and medals. All the participants were awarded certificates of participation.
The hosts, Gulf Medical University - Ajman, along with BITS Pilani - Dubai jointly emerged as overall champions this year and Ajman University was the runners up. The event was hosted by Body & Soul Health Club & Spa, the leading network of health clubs operated by the Hospitality Division of Thumbay Group.
The grand sports event is held each year keeping in view the philosophy of Gulf Medical University 'Healthy Body for a Healthy Mind' and to instill the spirit of sportsmanship and healthy competition among the students. The event has helped engage the student community in the UAE and empowering them with the spirit of sportsmanship, interprofessional teamwork and wellness.
