Mangaluru: One day lecture series held on ‘Physics of Materials’ at St Agnes College

Mangaluru, Mar 7: A-one-day lecture series on ‘Physics of Materials’ was conducted on March 6 by the department of Physics, St Agnes College, here.

The chief guest for the inaugural was Dr S Krishna Prasad, scientist, Centre for Nano and soft matter Sciences, Mangaluru.

Speaking on the occasion, he congratulated the college for completing 100 years of imparting education for women also adding that soft matter Sciences and Nano Technology was the buzz word in the present-day Scientific Research. The president of the function, Sr Dr Maria Roopa AC (joint secretary of St Agnes Institutions) spoke on the importance of Science and the curiosity one needs to have in Science to understand the functioning of various things. Mariola C Pinto, HOD Physics department, welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest while Marina Lobo proposed the vote of thanks. Kavyashree from Final BSc compered the programme.

Among the four sessions for the day, the first and third sessions were taken up by Dr S Krishna Prasad who spoke about Liquid Crystals- Basics and Applications and Nano Technology. He also touched briefly on the topic 'Viscoelastic Response of Soft Materials'.



The second session was taken by Dr Thirumaleshwara N Bhat, DST-INSPIRE faculty, department of Material Science, Mangalore University who spoke on the topic 'Energy efficient materials and devices'. Dr Ajith K M Associate Professor, department of Physics, NITK, Surathkal spoke in the fourth session on '2D Materials for Battery Applications – A computational approach'.

Dr Ajith K M was the chief guest for the valedictory while Sr Dr Jeswina, principal, was the president of the function. At the valedictory, certificates were distributed to the participants.

Around 177 participants who were staff and students of various colleges and the Physics students of St Agnes College benefitted from the sessions. Akhila of final Year BSc compered the function.
