Mangaluru, Mar 9: Former Haryana legislator and social activist Swami Agnivesh, stressed that Amit Shah had stopped the police from acting against people who fomented trouble in Delhi recently, which developed into communal clashes. He recalled that within months of Narendra Modi taking over as the chief minister of Gujarat in 2002, similar communal clashes had flared up and the police were thwarted from taking action then too.
He was speaking after participating as chief guest in the Citizenship Protection Convention organized by Citizens Coordination Committee's Dakshina Kannada district unit at Dr B R Ambedkar dais set up at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar at Jappinamogaru in the outskirts of the city on Sunday, March 8. The programme was organized in the form of protest against the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the recent violence at Delhi.
He pointed out that Modi had stopped the police from intervening when communal clashes erupted relating to the deaths of Kar Sevaks in a train at Godhra even though the forensic reports confirmed that the fire spread from within the train and the compartment was not torched from outside. "Instead of handing over bodies to the families they were taken in a procession, as a result of which communal clashes happened and about 2,500 Muslims were killed. Modi had denied any role in the incident then, but his falsehood has been laid bare in the recent disturbances," he felt.
He criticized the government for filing sedition case against Amulya Leone and an educational institution at Bidar and wondered why similar case was not filed against Pragya Singh Thakur when she had said that Godse was a patriot. He said that before seeking documents from the people for National Register of Citizens (NRC), Modi should furnish his degree certificate.
He urged the central government to release report on Pulwama attack in which a number of soldiers had died over a year ago in Kashmir. He felt that the government is lying to the people relating to the incident and wanted the names involved with the killing of soldiers to be made known to the people.
Former speaker of the state assembly, Ramesh Kumar, said that in spite of enjoying majority, the BJP does not have the right to take anti-constitutional decisions. He said that he and people like him will resist till the end all efforts to enforce CAA and NRC.
Former minister U T Khader, MLCs Ivan D'Souza and B M Farooq, Nazeer Ahmed, Syed Madani Shariat College principal Alhaj Usman Faizi Todhar, SKSM leader M G Muhammed and CPM leader Krishnappa Salian were among those who addressed the gathering.
Leaders like Ullal Syed Madani Dargah president Haji Abdurrashid Ullal, Muslim Central Committee vice president Haji Ibrahim Kodijal, Haji B M Mumtaz Ali, former MLA Mohiuddin Bava, Hidaya Foundation president Mansoor Ahmed Azad, SKSSF Dakshina Kannada district president Syed Amir Tangal and many others were present.
President of the committee U K Yousuf, presided. General secretary U K Muhammed Mustafa, welcomed. Convener Nazeer Ullal, read out the preamble to the constitution. U H Farooq moved resolution.
