Mangaluru, Mar 9: St Ann’s College of Education celebrated International Women’s Day on March 9 emphasizing the theme ‘I am generation equality: realizing women’s rights’.

The aim was to inculcate in students a deep quest for knowledge about the challenges women face and to acknowledge the social, political and economic achievements of women around the world. This also included the recognition of the most progressive roadmaps for the empowerment of women.

The programme began with a meaningful prayer service. The cultural programme included a song highlighting how feminism changes the way the world perceives a woman’s strength. A dance drama ‘Beti ki Kahaani’ that visualized the idea of womanhood was enacted. The students performed a skit on ‘an ideal village’ that encompassed women equality and greater achievements of women.

A symposium on the theme ‘women empowerment’ was conducted on various topics such as: Gender equality, leadership roles of women, nutrition among women and domestic violence and women harassment. Dr Devi Prabha Alva, associate professor, (Autonomous), former head of the department of Commerce, St Agnes College, Mangaluru was the chief guest and the chairperson for the symposium.

The chief guest, in her message, spoke about how women have acquired variegated roles and have been shouldering multiple tasks at home and in society. She also quoted how women have been honoured for the power and struggles, broken barriers and have reached the pinnacle of success in every sphere of life.

Sr Zeena AC, principal in her message spoke on the many achievements and skills emancipated by women from different walks of life. Akshitha Shetty, assistant professor coordinated the programme. Josna Priya D’Souza, a student teacher compered the programme. Nikita D’Souza explained the significance of the day and Nikita Heleena proposed the vote of thanks.
