Politicians, Sportsmen React Angrily to Thackeray's Remarks on Sachin

New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS) Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's remarks that India's cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar should "keep off the political pitch" has evoked strong reactions with virtually all political parties and sportsmen condemning Thackeray strongly.

Thackeray was reacting to the cricket legend's statement last week that "he was an Indian first and Marathi too, but Mumbai belongs to all". Here are the reactions to what the Shiv Sena supremo wrote Monday in party mouthpiece Saamna:

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi: "He (Thackeray) should be the last person to preach to a gentleman cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar."

Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor's Tweet: "On Sachin and Sena, my late dad Chandran Tharoor said in '66: 'with Maharashtra for Maharashtrians and Kashmir for Kashmiris, where is India for Indians'?"

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar: "Shiv Sena is on the wrong foot in criticising Sachin Tendulkar." (Nitish Kumar is from Janata Dal-Secular, part of the National Democratic Alliance of which the Shiv Sena is also a constituent.)

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley: "If any Maharashtrian says he is proud of being a Maharashtrian as well as an Indian, then I find this statement absolutely correct." (BJP leads the National Democratic Alliance.)

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut: "Bal Thackeray has not said anything wrong. We also believe that the nation comes first. That is why we say 'Jai Hind Jai Maharashtra'."

Former Test cricketer Ajit Wadekar: "Sachin plays for india and that motivates him."

Olympian Milkha Singh: "Whatever Sachin has said is completely right. India comes first and state comes later. Sport and politics should not be mixed."

Sachin's statement will unite India: Chavan

Mumbai, Nov 16 (PTI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Monday came out in strong defence of Sachin Tendulkar, whose 'Mumbai for all' remark drew criticism from Shiv Sena, saying the master blaster had spoken from the bottom of his heart and that his statement will unite the country.

Taking exception to the article by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray in his party mouthpiece 'Samana' criticising Tendulkar, the Chief Minister said "the master blaster has spoken from the bottom of his heart."

"Sachin's statement has been made in true sportsman spirit. Though he is a Maharashtrian, he plays for the country. This (Tendulkar's remark) will unite the entire country," Chavan said.

"I fully agree with him (Sachin). People will not support Shiv Sena's political game," he said.

Chavan said the entire country was proud of Tendulkar's achievement of completing 20 years in international cricket. "Sachin has done India proud," he said.

"I do not attach any importance to what some people have said about Tendulkar," the chief minister said without naming the Shiv Sena chief.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena spokesman Sanjay Raut today said that party Chief had not criticised Tendulkar for the latter's "Mumbai for all Indians" comment.

"The remark made in today's issue of Saamana is not criticism of Sachin. Balasaheb commented in his capacity as an elder...it was an elderly advice to Sachin," Raut told reporters here.

"There was no need for you to take a cheeky single by making these remarks. By doing so, you have got a run-out from the 'pitch' of Marathi pschye," the mouthpiece quoted the Shiv Sena chief as saying.

Thackeray also expressed displeasure that Sachin had "left the crease" and moved to the pitch of politics by making these remarks which had hurt the Marathi mind.

"Though being from Maharashtra, he (Sachin) plays for the country -- that's important. We are first Indians and then anything else," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan told NDTV.

"I congratulate Sachin for this wonderful statement. This will unite the entire country and definitely send a good message across," he said.

Tendulkar felicitated by Modi for 20 years in international cricket

Ahmedabad, Nov 16, (PTI):  Sachin Tendulkar was on Monday felicitated for completing 20 years in international cricket by Gujarat Chief Minister and state Cricket Association President Narendra Modi before the start of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka here.

The master batsman, who started his international career 1989, was presented with a gold-plated memento of Somnath temple on behalf of the state government, a silver plate on behalf of the Gujarat Cricket Association and a shawl. The 36-year-old Tendulkar had also celebrated the occasion by having a dinner with his teammates at the team hotel last night.

A cake was also cut on the occasion and a special invitee to the function was the visiting Sri Lankan team's ace spinner and longest-serving member Muthiah Muralitharan, according to informed sources. Tendulkar has scored 12,773 runs in 159 Tests and 17,178 runs in 436 ODIs, the highest by any cricketer in the world. He has also notched up a world record 42 hundreds in Tests and 45 in ODIs.

Nagesh Nayak, B’lore and Rajesh Rao, M’lore – I really pity on both of you always making appalling remarks, dubious statements against minorities and spewing venom to divide both communities from a large majority community. Mind your own language and learn to comment like matured persons. I am an elderly person now, born and brought up in Mangalore. Worked in Mangalore, Bombay for so many years and now in the gulf. Taking on this particular issue and that of your glorification towards Bal Thackeray, what is your experience to live and work in different places and to mingle with people of different communities and in particular in Bombay. Have you lived and worked in Bombay (being from other state) that too with ‘Marathi’ people. Just go to Bombay and experience it … their attitude, racial discrimination towards not only with Christians, Muslims but also with (because they are from other states) Hindus brothers, your own community. Why this discrimination and hatred? Who is the cause and who has infiltrated this hatred in the minds of Marathis? You guys, stay in Bombay, travel in buses, trains and work in Bombay for some time and experience and come back to me. I have experienced in (from 1981 to 2009) these years and seen in my own eyes how these fascist butchered and set afire the slums and killed so many innocent people during communal riots who also make part and parcel of BHARAT MAHAN. Now you guys supporting Shiv Sena chief, BT’s remark on Sachin Tendulkar because he said, “he was an Indian first and Marathi too, but Mumbai belongs to all", you both are nothing but worst enemies of democracy!!!!!

I must congratulate Mr. Thakery for being so brave and comment on Sachin. I am not a SS supporter. I am sure there will be lot of comments against this, but before you make any comment, think of these:

    1. All the politicians who comment against Mr. Thakery now, where were they when MNS attacked poor Bihari Auto drivers. Where were they when MNS sent warning letter to SBI. Sachin is so important than all those poor auto drivers and threat to SBI ?

    2. Ruling party in Maharashtra is not SS or MNS, then why the ruling party did not take any action against these parties. Why they are coming out and talking now. Don’t you think this is because of Sachin’s popularity and to maintain voters support.

    3. Take our own example in Mangalore Railway station, who are the employees. Forget about Christians. They are any way not counted at all, but how many Mangaloreans are employed. Don’t you think some awareness about employing Mangaloreans should be there?

Not only Mumbai but every city and parts of the city belongs to every Indians. The cartoonist is really old but still roaring sometimes. The comments on sachin is interesting but there were more interesting comments about Abu Azmi went unnoticed by all. The so called Tiger had said if it was shiv sena ,they would have made a tandoori out of Abu Azmi.I feel this is more provocative than sachin issue and Abu Azmi was beaten up while taking oath in Hindi and in a Hindi Country.it proves that he has no freedom of speech at a Government House.

Now this Sachin issue is catching fire only due the cricket crazy Indians all over India. The Bal Tiger is a strange personality and we should feel pity for him. Half of his life he lived a caged life in Mathoshree not because of his choice but for security reasons. Have you ever heard about the so called Tiger visit to Delhi, Kolatta, Chennai or Bangalore?

It is so unfortunate to his part that he cannot move inside his own country and all this is due to his roaring statements from the den. The Mumbai police is guarding the Tiger for more than 20 years, means the tax payers money is spent on security for single cartoonist turned political leader who is allotted a free piece of land at Bandra for his cartoons on the Mumbai daily news magazines thirty years ago. He and his followers believe that he is the only savior of the Marathi manus- 9 to 5 (hardly) working class. I was really shocked in June 2009 to see the Bihari bhai selling fresh (iced) fish in Mumbai chawls (row houses) .All that issue of creating havoc by beating the railways exam candidates is a political drama and waste of time and money .Mumbai belongs to Indians and not for only marathis and the real people who proved it are from Bihar and UP.

It is the right thing Sachin had made because Politicians like Thackeray are splitting India under the language background for their political benifits only. So We all are Indians first language doesn't matter there should be unity first then language comes.Hindi is our national language so we have respect the Hindi language first What ever may be our mother tounge/state language. So Please Ignor such silly comments from Politicians. In the Indian Cricket history Sachin is the Very good Gentleman I have ever seen.
