Udupi: Coronavirus - Three Manipal University students admitted in KMC Hospital

Udupi, Mar 13: Three students of Manipal University have been admitted into KMC Hospital Manipal as there is suspicion of them having contracted Coronavirus infection.

These students had recently returned from USA and Kuwait. They have been kept in the isolated ward of the hospital. The throat swabs of the first two students were sent for testing on Thursday, March 12, and reports are expected by Friday evening. The students have been suffering from fever, cough, and breathing problems.


Sudhir Chandra Sooda

Two of the students were admitted on Thursday, while the other was admitted on Friday. The third student had come from Malaysia.

This was confirmed to Daijiworld by district health officer Sudhir Chandra Sooda.

    MAHE is closed down for a week. One week off for the students from 14th to 20th March, 2020. However, the faculty and non-teaching staff including interns and PG students of medical and allied health programs have to report for duty. Just have to wait and watch. A full shutdown should have been enforced excluding essential services like the hospital.

    The latest is that the holidays for student is extended till 28th. Almost all Hostelers have already left for their hometowns. It is also heard that test reports of all 3 students admitted are negative. MAHE is requested to arrange for online lectures and assignments for students and seek the completed assignments from student in defined time frame as is being practiced during routene classes... This will ensure that students will remain engaged in study during holidays and and if all goes well, they can appear for their exams on time.

    The whole machinery was sleeping till yesterday and knee jerk reactions started today. A mega music entertainment function was conducted by Corporation Bank yesterday with guests from across the country yesterday within a hospital complex whereas a small community function is banned within eight hours. Responses and reactions should be scaled up on a timescale.....!

    KMC, Manipal itself must be having the testing facilities! It had when nepha cases where there in N KERALA . What has happened to their Virology lab. We don’t seem to hear about them or from them now !

    The MIV, manipal institute of virology has their testing licence revoked because someone put false accusations of mishandling of samples. They claimed that MIV was withholding samples and probably sending them elsewhere or whatever. Now MAHE can't get any foreign funding cause of this. What a loss to 1000s of people..MIV was probably the only legit good thing MAHE had that actually did something for society.

    It was only a question of time for corona to be expected.. ..most of the international students in Manipal are from corona affected areas
