Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 17: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Sindhu B Rupesh, observed that of late more and more people are found to be wearing masks because of coronavirus concerns. She observed that healthy people need not wear such masks.

She was speaking at a meeting of industrialists and enterprises in Dakshina Kannada district organized at the auditorium of the DC office on Monday March 16.

"Only those who are ill and suffering from symptoms of the disease need to wear masks. Still, we have taken precautions to ensure that there is no shortage of stock of masks in the district. The department of drugs control will keep an eye on the situation. We have also asked the concerned to monitor selling price of the masks," she explained.

She advised industrial units of the district to take measures to see that none of the diseases acquire the proportions of epidemic in their jurisdictions. "Those who recently travelled to foreign countries and travelled to various parts of the country should be kept under medical observation and 28 days of quarantine. Health condition of their family members, particularly the senior citizens, should be closely tracked," she said. She also requested the industrialists to cut their tour to foreign destinations as far as possible and to postpone business-related foreign meetings.

She said that all steps have been taken to contain the spread of coronavirus infection in the district, passengers arriving at the airport and New Mangalore port are being kept under medical observation, separate isolation wards have been set up in different hospitals, and that ESI hospital services will be utilized to regulate coronavirus infection. She added that even NMPT Hospital has been readied for this task.

She advised industrialists to keep an eye on health condition of their employees and provide treatment to the sick.

Additional deputy commissioner M J Roopa, urban development project director Gayatri Nayak, joint director for industries Gokudas Kamath etc were present.

In the meantime, even though the government had suggested to temporarily suspending use of biometric equipment in government offices because of coronavirus threat, biometric is used for issuance of food grains under ration cards. Sources in the food and civil supplies department said that that on this issue, a meeting of officials of the department was held at Bengaluru on Monday and the doubts will be cleared on Tuesday.

Presuming everyone wears a mask. There would be probably viruses sticking to the inside or outside of the mask depending on the wearer being healthy or not. How will one dispose the masks- inside your own house or in your neighbors'( presuming the saying Love thy neighbor..) during disposal there is again a chance of spread. Medical waste collectors are not going to collect from every house and you will give it to the garbage collector -read Antony Waste. They will move about around the city in an uncovered vehicle blaring the Radio song "(Co)Rona nahi", people will cover their face with a hanky more for the stench than fear of the dreaded Corona and presuming one person uses only one mask per day there will be more than 6 lakh masks at Pachanady. The residents of Pachanady will curse the mask wearers . If everyone wears a N95 (God forbid), disposal will be still more difficult. The garbage mount that collapsed last year will be refilled and residents will forget the virus and pray for preventing another landslide. The practical solution is not Mask but social distancing.Say bye bye to CoRONA say welcome to CoHASNA.Be Happy be Healthy.

Agree with the points. But in the meantime I would like to say is we don't come to know who is infected and who is not. Some infected people may not wear in order to hide that they are infected or for some other reason. In order to save myself what happens if I wear a mask when I have to go out? After usage instead of throwing it's better to burn in our own residential places instead of throwing in the garbages. About garbage you explained very well...

Cynthia bai, just ignore them...they just speak nonsense. Where are the masks available if one is sick or healthy......?????? Let these so called our leaders and also so called doctors explain.....???? I need only two masks for my wife and for me. If one need not travel and one need not wear mask is ok....but what if one has to travel and also wear a mask and also wants to use hand sanitisers....!!!??? is it available in the market...???? I was in Australia last 3 months....end of my journey, I could see in all the supermarkets that hand tissues and Gand tissues section was empty. Hand sanitisers and masks were not available (much before that) and also fast food items like noodles, pasta racks were empty. I can not think why tissue papers were not to be seen....!!!!????

For you it is easy you can wear a veil, burkha or ghunghat , which can cover the eyes nose and mouth. It will not provide full protection but reduce the chances of infection, the side benefit will be it will protect your identity. Males cannot wear balaclava as they will face trouble from other sources.Be Happy Be Healthy.

It is home quarantine. As there are so many travellers from Dubai infected with carona while travelling please take extra care for children. Make them to wear mask and handgloves while travelling. From airport to home arrange for private transport. Keep them in quarantine for 2 weeks. If symptoms occurs please admit them to hospital.

    Dear DC Sindhu Rupesh

It can take up to 14 days for this virus to show the symptoms. So, you can be absolutely in healthy condition and still carry the virus without showing a single symptom for some days and we aren't sure if it will spread to other people during that period. If the virus was not going to spread in those 14 days to others after we acquiring it (though we don't show any symptoms ) , why would you or the health authorities ask every traveler to quarantine themselves mandatory for 14 days? (Even travelers in healthy condition) . This would be every travelers question to you from now on!!

Harvard Health publishing Harvard medical school had answered this following question:
How soon after I'm infected with the new coronavirus will I start to be contagious?

The time from exposure to symptom onset (known as the incubation period) is thought to be 14 days, though symptoms typically appear within four or five days after exposure. We don't know the extent to which people who are not yet experiencing symptoms can infect others, but it's possible that people may be contagious for several days before they become symptomatic.

Now this is for everyone who says masks are not required .By wearing masks, we are helping each other. We don't know who is carrying the virus because you may look absolutely fine. Get your facts right . We wear masks for a reason. I live abroad and trust me, we all wear masks to contain the spread. Using a mask is imperative . When you use a mask, your sneeze and cough don't get out of the mask, hence the droplets don't get out of the mask and you are basically protecting the other by not spreading the disease. If everyone wears a mask and follows the hand hygiene steps, we can protect each other . Using hand-rub/Sterillium would help a lot to keep hands clean. First we need to educate ourselves. I am not saying this because I work in the healthcare industry. This is for us to get our facts right . For once, be serious !!

DC please do not make irresponsible statements..
There are so many suspects around and people without any symptoms too can carry virus and transmit on the way..
And your labs are capable to test only maximum 100 samples per day...
From many sources on the internet, i have read... India is very very backward on the steps taken so far...

Please watch people.. .if mask is available then please wear it! Better

Italy asking the world to listen and react before it's too late:

    A letter from Italy,
    peace for all,
We live in Italy - Milan,
I'm going to share with you and explain to you, "How is life here in Milan" during these difficult
days and how do I think you should learn from the mistakes and their consequences that we live here.
We are currently in quarantine. We don't take to the streets, the police are in constant motion and arrest anyone outside his home.
Everything is closed! ... business, malls, stores, all streets without movement.
Feeling of the end of the world !!
Italy, the country of living life, is transformed from one moment to the next as if it were a dark country of war.
It is a fact that I never thought I would ever live!
People are confused, sad, anxious and helpless, and often do not understand how this reality was imposed on
them and when this whole nightmare will end.
The big mistake was that at the start of the first hit people continued to lead their lives as usual and took to the streets for work, entertainment and feeling like a vacation period, so gatherings with friends and banquets abound.
Everyone was wrong and so were you!
I beg you, be careful, this is neither a laugh nor a joke.
Protect your loved ones, your parents, and your grandparents! The disease is dangerous for them.
About 200 people die here every day, not because medicine in Milan is not good (it's one of the best in the world),
but rather because there are no places for everyone!
Doctors choose who will die! This is only because of the silliness of the citizens at the beginning, who decided to continue their lives as usual, regardless of the new situation!
Please, learn from the mistakes, we are a small country that could end up with a great tragedy.
    Listen well now ,,,
Don't go out into crowded places.
Try not to eat in public places.
Stay longer at home during this time!
Listen to the Ministry of Health guidelines (don't play it!).

    * Don't go out into crowded places.
    * Try not to eat in public places.
    * Stay longer at home during this time!

    Good advice.

    But people must note:

    * The average age of death in Italy: 81 years!
    * Deaths happened mostly where there were co-morbidity factors present (diabetes, cancer, heart problems, etc etc)

    Bottom-line:

If you are under-65 AND have no co-morbidity factors present, you will not get RIP messages anytime soon!

    So cheer up!

That is absolutely correct. Masks are unnecessary for healthy persons.

If one is freightened of the droplets from someone's sneezes/coughs/spit, the EYES are as much receptacles as the mouth, if not more.

Only a sick person needs a mask - so that their sneezes/coughs do not produce airborne droplets.

People are going crazy over buying masks, sanitisers, and other things. Just use a plain old bar (cheapest) soap to wash your hands after touching any public surfaces.

You as well as the DC Are correct.Even if a healthy person wears a mask the virus can enter through the eyes and nasolacrimal duct into the nose pharynx and lungs. An infected person or a carrier should wear a mask as the air that he breaths out can infect others(viruses can go into the eyes but ordinarily do not come out of the eyes.) Doctors are exposed to patients and could be potential asymptomatic carriers hence they wear masks.

Using a mask is imperative . When you use a mask, your sneeze and cough don't get out of the mask, hence the droplets don't get out of the mask and there is no way the droplets will reach the eyes of others because a masks job is to contain the droplets too. Healthy means a person is neither a carrier nor a patient, that is what the DC and Managlurian mean. They are those who have tested negative and they cannot infect others.

Quote "Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Sindhu B Rupesh, observed that of late more and more people are found to be wearing masks because of coronavirus concerns. She observed that healthy people need not wear such masks.'' Unquote

Nowhere the word "healthy " has been defined .Moreover, if you read DC's statements properly, you will know she is referring to general public . I understand her intention may be to eliminate panic but precaution is always better than cure.

Again, you can still look 100% healthy from the outside even after having acquired coronavirus and may spread the disease to others in those 14 days. We still don't know much about the virus but most studies say that it can spread even when not showing any symptoms . Each lab test and its results will take more than a week so you mean to say that the public should not to take precautions until they test positive or negative and give it to many more people by the time the results are out? E.g.: If I wore a mask, how would the droplets of my sneeze or cough reach the other? First it needs to get out of my mouth to reach the other/even to reach others eyes and when I wear a mask, I am stopping the spread as much as possible. If all did this along with continuous hand washing, we would minimize the impact. Basic logic! All countries aren't crazy to close schools and malls if the disease wasn't contagious.

    Dear Monty Dotor, Mangalore,
How would you recognize who is healthy? We don't know who has it and who doesn't because the virus can spread from person to person through contact with an infectious person (and it may include before they started showing symptoms basically looking all healthy) . All countries are taking extreme precautions and look at us. You are justifying why we shouldn't wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as mask. Also, write an article on we shouldn't use hand-rub/Sterillium because our hands will get rough :/ At this rate, we will reach stone age!
