In his address to nation, PM Modi calls for daylong 'Janata Curfew' on March 22

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS): In wake of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which has also affected India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged the people of the country to opt for a 'Janata Curfew' on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In a special address to the nation, Modi said: "Today I am requesting the people of the country for a Janata curfew, on March 22, this Sunday, from between 7 a.m to 9 p.m.

"...This is public curfew. Janata curfew means for the public, curfew imposed on public by themselves."

He urged people to follow this 'curfew', not go out on the streets or even gather in their societies and stay inside their homes.

The Prime Minister further urged people above the age of 60 should avoid going out in the coming weeks.

Sharing an instance from the past, he said: "Might be the present generation is not aware... when there were a situation of war, and villages were blacked out and the glass of the windows was darkened. People use to take precautions and even in case the there was no war, the local administration carried out a drill regularly."

The Prime Minister also urged the people to follow the instructions issued by the state governments.

"Today everyone has to take a resolve to not get infected by the Covid-19 and also save others from getting Covid-19. In such a pandemic case, only one mantra works, if we are healthy, then the entire world is healthy," he said.

At a time when there is no medicine have been made for the disease, the only thing to stay safe is restraint, he said. "Don't go in the crowds, avoid going out and what today is being called social distancing in the era of Covid-19 is very useful," he said.

"Our resolve and restraint is going to play very important role in fighting Covid-19."

The Prime Minister also said that if one thinks that by roaming on the streets is safe, then it is not good. "By doing so you will do injustice to your near ones. I urge the people of the country for coming weeks, whenever it is very necessary then only come out," he added.

India on Thursday registered 22 fresh cases of Covid-19 taking the total number of affected persons to 173. At least four people have died, one each from Punjab, Karnataka, Delhi and Maharashtra.

First learn some facts and improve your knowledge brother. Educate yourself before posting something shit here. Have some basic knowledge in science. Try to understand why there is a 14hr curfew, whats the life span of COVID-19.

The purpose of the Janta curfew is to prevent people-to-people contact. Laudable as it is, just a one-day isolation will not work since it takes 2 -3 weeks for a person to develop immunity to the virus once it enters the body ( therefore the 14- day quarantine protocol).
The incubation period of the virus is 2-10 days which is when the person will not have any symptoms but will be unknowingly infecting people around. Therefore it is imperative that self-isolation/social distancing be done by everyone simultaneously for two continuous weeks for it to be effective.
And yes, I am a science student.

Really Ms Baliga. Let me tell you our Beloved PM Modi is beloved. I do honour him just as you do.

But let me tell you, our PM took the cue from a few countries (if not 27) to finally deign to address the nation. Because many countries have already addressed their respective nations on this deadly pandemic.

Just this morning I saw a video of Spain wherein people have taken advice from their PM. They were in their balconies, courtyards and street corners, clapping, whistling and cheering at the relentless efforts of medical professionals and nurses.

We are actually taking example from 27 countries, if you don't mind me saying.

    Janatha Crufew..what a nonsensical dictum?

Flights arriving from overseas should have been stopped long ago to contain the disease. All those who were primarily infected and died had come from abroad. Instead of doing all that this pakoda man, who is good only to make tea, is asking whole India to sit inside the house.

Andh Bhakts are saying "What an Idea Sirji?"

He has not at all spoken anything about the contingency plan the government has to control the spread of the disease. But he cannot say also as the govt does not have one. Only the grace of God can save the common people of India. If it goes to third stage, half of India will decimate.

What childish requests of asking the citizens to clap for the health workers? Just stupid and braineless ideas from the Nagpur factory.

Eating habits and lifestyle are irrelevant ( despite what self-styled gurus may try to convince us) to the spread of Covid 19. Scientists say it’s not a given that hot humid weather will slow the virus down.
As for our immunity, India unfortunately has some of the highest number of diabetes and hypertension cases anywhere in the world , which can prove lethal if they contract the Coronavirus

I was expecting something out of the box from the PM but what he said is already known to all of us. I wonder what good is going to come out of the Janata Curfew this Sunday. These are very difficult times and very touch measures are the need of the hour. Observing just one day curfew is hardly going to make an impact on the situation. Although it would be very painful, India will have to close down for atleast a fortnight to arrest the spread of this dreaded disease. Of course, it will not be easy to take a decision of this magnitude but I guess we just don't have any other options.
