China's national archery team holds trials behind closed doors

Sichuan, March 20 (IANS): China's national archery team held a closed-door trial competition with two provincial teams from Tianjin and Sichuan in their training base and Wei Shaoxuan had a record-breaking result in the men's individual ranking round.

The three-day trial competition was held after the national team had three months of winter training and the results "proved we had made great progress", manager of the national team Xiao Haopeng told Xinhua on Friday.

Wei, who helped China win its historic first men's team gold at the 2019 World Archery Championships in the Netherlands, had an excellent 355 points in the first 36-arrow individual ranking round, two points more than the current world record.

However, the young talent was beaten by veteran Ren Jinke 7-1 in the final on Wednesday while the women's individual title went to Zhang Mengyao, who edged teammate Lan Lu 6-5.

Lan was victorious on Friday in the women's team event together with teammate Long Xiaoqing and Li Liyuan of team Tianjin. The national team A formed by Wang Dapeng, Shi Zhenqi and Lin Liangwen triumphed in the men's team competition after a perfect 60-point performance in the 1/2 elimination round.

As the team manager Xiao introduced, China, with full quota for Tokyo 2020, originally planned to finalise its Olympic roster in February, but the decision had to be postponed to at least May due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
