Udupi diocese releases official statement on Fr Mahesh suicide case

Media Release

Udupi, Mar 21: Diocese of Udupi released an official statement on Fr Mahesh D'Souza suicide case on on Saturday, March 21.

In an official release, it stated, "The diocese of Udupi appreciates the objective and impartial investigation carried out by the law enforcing agencies, especially the police, into the untimely death of Fr Mahesh D’Souza, the assistant parish priest of Shirva parish and the principal of Don Bosco English Medium School.

"The investigation conducted in a very detailed manner, as indicated from the report submitted before the sub-divisional magistrate, Kundapur, comprising a total of 1580 pages with a 202-page summary, would reflect that, 95 witnesses have been enquired into and their statements recorded, reports of the forensic experts, post mortem report from the doctors, reports of the audio and video analysis experts, have been received and analysed, and personally verified the circumstantial evidences, and thereby have arrived at the following conclusions:

1. The death of Fr Mahesh occurred between 8.50 pm and 9.05 pm on October 11, 2019, in the office of the principal.
2. The death was a suicide by hanging, not a murder or any other cause, abetted by the telephonic threat of a person who was angered by the chats between his wife and Fr Mahesh.
3. Fr Mahesh had a suicidal tendency and had attempted suicide thrice in the past.
4. The allegations regarding the proposed transfer, ill-treatment by the parish priest, etc. have been proved to be baseless.
5. Apart from the above, it is reiterated that, the investigation concludes that none of the following, i.e., Fr Vincent Robert Crasta, Fr Denis Alexander D’Sa, Fr Ashwin Aranha, bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo and Alwyn Dominic Danthi are, in any manner, responsible for the suicide of Fr Mahesh.

"As the facts have been laid bare by the police investigation report, there remain no doubts regarding the cause of the demise of Fr Mahesh.

"The diocese of Udupi mourns the untimely death of Fr Mahesh D’Souza, and prays for the repose of his soul," said the statement.

A man went to his doctor and declared, "Doctor, I am dead." The doctor said, "The fact that you are moving shows that you are not."

The man says, "I have heard of limb movements after a person dies, so that's what is happening to me." The doctor tries convincing him by giving other evidence, but the man keeps saying that he is dead.

Finally, the doctor says, "Dead people don't bleed, so I will make a tiny incision to see what happens." The doctor makes the incision and the man begins to bleed. The doctor says, "Look, this is evidence that you are not dead."

The man looks at the blood and says, "Lo and behold, dead people also bleed after all."

I think if anyone knows better than what the investigation has revealed, then there are many ways to pursue the matter.

We live in a universe so massive that by comparison we are smaller than a speck of dust.

The problem with the world is that many people think their opinions are bigger than the universe itself. And they will do everything in their power to project their opinion as truth. As we see happening.

Someone rightly said, "The most dangerous person is a bored person." I would like to add, "The most dangerous person is a bored and disturbed person."

The sorry state of affairs is that a person spiritually trained attempted suicide for 3 times. The person trained for spiritual trained not to be used for business purpose of Diocese. The diocese must provide better worting conditions than the government department but diocese is exploiting people workers. So hypocrisy should be stopped. The Christianity can survive without so-called priest

Why nothing mentioned about the CCTV footage in the police report as well as in the statement in diocese letter???
In the initial report published by daiji there were people visited Fr.Mahesh and it was captured by the CCTV.
    Where is the CCTV footage????
The police report is not fully clear. Also it looks like the Bishop has given statement in a hurry to burry the case. More investigations required to bring more clarity in this case.
    I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

You are right James, but dont blame. Wait for daijiworld's full report based on full 200 plus page investigative report and comment after that. But looking at the today's udupi diocese statements, it is evident that personal who released the report is unfit for the job, he is biased and good for nothing. We trust daijiworld report and not udupi diocese statements

This is very poor communication by Udupi diocese. The Bishop, Parish Priest of Shirva, Asst Parish Priest of Shirva and thousands of well wishers gone through extreme tough time due to this case. But after obtaining 202 page report, the PRO is sending few words and acting to be diplomatic. I am sure, Udupi diocese failed. Leadership failed. PRO is worst and biased and even not professional. I think people have lost faith. The need of the hour is complete reshuffle in the diocese, otherwise, I am afraid, Udupi is going to worst diocese in India. Pls act before it happens. First change your communication manager, everything will change

My question Abhimani of whom? Think & Analyze what did u post in past. You blamed Priest & Church. Are you 100% perfect as a son/daughter, husband/wife, father/mother,..... in what substance you are poking Church and its clergies when you are not Mr/Ms Perfect ??!

Questions are many but Mr Fake Abhimani ... you have no words to post in FB, so still Abhimani. Congratulations to you and your cheap thoughts.

Based on this report answer below question pls.

When he had tried 3 times, why it was not reported and how come he was given such responsibility?

Just giving statement is not enough. Giving this statement its proved that diocese has failed.

No one made anyone responsible for death. Only question was asked why no action taken from their side n they kept silent.

Remember, so many things are open now and many may come out..

As you said.. we may not be perfect as just like Fr Mahesh was not but nothing will stop to remain as his Abimani for his good work.

First of all prayers that we may be saved from the pandemic are on and we are praying... Reading a news article and knowing the facts that the whole world was wanting to know does not come in the way of our prayers for each other and Fr.Mahesh's soul. With quarantine/social distancing/lockdowns it gives us time to read in detail and will help us to pray for him further.

Secondly, though the press release is pointwise,it does not cover all the points. Looks like the diocese is doing their duty and fulfilling people's demand by telling the minimum details of his misdeeds

Fr. Mahesh is totally Innocent or victim of circumstance...and we pray for him and his service..

Valson...don't act like investigating officer to say that Fr. Mahesh was innocent. If he was innocent, why he needs four mobiles? Why he was chatting with five women? Chatting with women is not wrong but as per investigation report chat was not proper for a priest. Even for lay person chat with other women in lust is sin. Why David threatened Fr. Mahesh? He warned him before as well. No one will warn anyone for no reason. Why Fr. Mahesh was thrown out of S.V.D? Now where are the people who abused the parish priest Fr. Dsa and Bishop? There were vested interests acting behind scenes in this case to falsely accuse parish priest and this was proved in the investigation.

Hey Mr Langoolacharya, dont accept defeat. Fr Mahesh wont like it....he knew that he would not be there to tell his side of the story and so he has has left solid evidences in the form of chats and videos that cannot be disputed.(as some people dont believe witnesses and police). Chats and videos exchanged and retrieved by Forensic labs cannot be bought and created i hope. For those who comment in support and doubt the investigation, i urge Daiji to give us clippings and screenshots. You people will want to bring him more disgrace ..

This kind of retaliation by way of comment is only because a large group of people were not ready to even think of the possibility that Mahesh could have made a mistake, when they were trying to frame other innocent clergy. Now when the cat is out of the bag you want to discuss corona virus.
