Mangalore: ‘Hummer H2’ Equipped with Satellite Security System, in City

Mangalore, Nov 29: Hummer H2, the American all-terrain four wheel drive (4WD) vehicle, a fantastic car reverred for its satellite-linked security system, has been putting the city roads on fire since the last three days. This is the first such car with advanced features, to have been introduced in the city. The car, shipped from Dubai port, reached the port here recently,

The car, ‘Hummer H2’, manufactured by General Motors USA, has made its foray into India, with a handful of cars moving around in the metros. The state capital Bangalore, has only one such vehicle as of now. Prasad Panikker, originally from Tiruvanantapuram, Kerala, who runs a mining industry in UAE, and a resident of Kadri Temple New Road here, is the proud owner of this prestigious vehicle.

The car has excellent luxury features besides security system and medical facility. It has six seats, and the seats provide cozy comfort for the passengers, depending upon their individual weights.  Travelling in the car gives an experience of flying in an aircraft. The driver’s seat is located on the left, and the vehicle has in-built systems to repair a punctured tyre or inflate the tyres when they get deflated.

The vehicle continuously has connectivity with security agencies through the satellite.  If someone steals the vehicle, the vehicle sends the signal to the policemen immediately through the satellite. As the driver/owner has to start the vehicle through his/her secret codes, which are registered in advance through the satellites, others cannot start the vehicle. It would be impossible for the thieves to lay hands on valuables kept in the vehicle, and in USA, this vehicle is specifically used for security purposes.

General Motors manufactures ‘Hummer H1’ for the Americal army, while ‘Hummer H2’ is meant exclusively for civilians. The car gives a mileage of two kms per litre of petrol, and Prasad Panikker claims that this vehicle has been introduced in South India for the first time.

This vehicle bears international registration number. Panikker says that the Kerala policemen have been quick to understand the registration system of the car, while the Karnataka policemen stop the car repeatedly and view the records with suspicion.  He however, was not prepared to reveal its price.

Panikker, a mechanical engineer, has been in UAE since the last two decades. He holds a PhD from an American university.

Remarkable , you did a 119 km stretch from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 28 minutes. That is well over the limited speed of 120 kph. You would have been captured by 28 radars placed on that highway. A very costly speed ride I must say.

The gas guzzlers are on the verge of extinction. Soon anyone could afford a second hand H2. By the way the registration is of Fujairah (an emirate of UAE) and it will be required to be re-exported back to UAE within a stipulated time. I despise who show off too much.

I have noted the comments of sour grapes, procedure for import,2 kms to a litre of petrol, etc. Can someone tell me for how long a left hand drive car can be imported into India without payment of duty, etc before it is needed to be reexported. I am told that Mumbai Customs refuse to allow such import if it is a left hand drive vehicle- maybe more cars will come in this way thru Mangalore. There must be a uniform rule/law for the whole country. I wish the Pannikar's a pleasant holiday in their Hummer.

Its individual style, taste and affordability to have a hummer running in Mangalore. Its purely a matter of personal choice. This vehicle has been specially designed for hilly and desert terrains. The cost of the vehicle is still affordable for many rich but the question here is, is it worth burning so much petrol for every kilometre and the necessity to use such a heavy vehicle for the normal roads.

Hummer H2 costs around Rs 70-90 Lakhs. If you buy this vehicle, you will have to buy a petrol pump also!. GM has the least sales of H2. Howe ever, H1/(Humvee) is sold as a Military vehicle and mostly used by the US Army. I feel A Bentley/Rolls-Royce/Ferrari would be a better status symbol than a H2. The security system mentioned is available in India for a small price. In summary, Hummer H2 is a great vehicle for petrol pump owners /Politicians/cricketers (MS Dhoni)/ or anyone who has plenty of extra cash only.

This is temporary exported from UAE with the Vehicle Tourism Certificate from RTA,thats why they have not cancelled UAE number plate,it can be import back to UAE without paying duty again in the same time you need to keep deposit at indian customs untill you will re-export back to its Origin'

People of mangalore have a lot of money since the roads are getting developed now, we must have already seen a BMW Q6, Audi A3 and many more.

How do the RTO in Mangalore allow a foreign registered car with Left hand driving specication to run on the roads of Karnatakar, when the officially permitted rule is only Right hand driven vehicles are allowed. Tomorow if there is an accdent from where do the get the details of vehicles when no registration has been done in India for this vehicle. Is there any different law for people with extra money in India

I believe the Hummer is over hyped in India probably because of its mean macho image seen in Hollywood movies. In the UAE very few Hummers are seen on the roads because they are less reliable (as with most American cars, high maintenance cost, low resale value and to top it all it is a reknowned gas guzzler, which would be a big No No in India given the high fuel cost. I would like to see how Hummer would be positioned in India and perform (sales wise) while pitted against the more reliable German and Japanese cars.
