Orissa : Kandhamal Nun Rape - Main Accused Arrested

BHUBANESWAR, Dec 7 (IANS): The main accused in the gang rape of a nun in Orissa's Kandhamal district during last year's communal clashes has been arrested, police said on Monday.

"We have arrested Gururam Patra from Dharampur area of the district on Sunday evening," investigating officer B K Mohanty said.

Patra had allegedly led the mob that attacked the nun at K Nuagaon village in the district on August 24 last year and then raped her.

With Patra's arrest, the total number of people held in the case has gone up to 19. Mohanty said at least 11 accused in the case are absconding and efforts are on to nab them.

Kandhamal district, about 200 km from here, witnessed widespread communal violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram on August 23 last year. Police had blamed Maoists for the killings.

At least 38 people were killed in the state and thousands of Christians were forced to flee their homes after their houses were attacked by rampaging mobs.

    Nagesh and Rajesh, hold on yourselves. Your over enthusiasm in supporting your partners in crime exposes your background and mentality. If you say raping a nun is right, then what is wrong forcefully converting someone? Was she raped because she is converted? In Goa, a Christian raped another Christian. It is the result of man's lust who thinks woman just as an object. Who said it is right? Did anyone justify and write comment? This nun was raped just because she was Christian. It was not purely out of lust but it is the result of 'religious lust', a lust that begs only for blood and nothing else. You guys better not teach lessons of peace and harmony when hatred and divisive attitude runs through your each cell. The question here is not just rape of a nun, but the reason behind it? After all you people often tell that it is the provoking dress of a woman that leads to raping in India. Don't you? Then what kind of provoking dress a nun wear? Is a habit or saree provoking that animal within you runs out of control? Do not tell it is mere lust. But rather whenever you see a Christian or a Muslim woman, you sweat within saffron cheddis!! Would these guys rape if there was one Hindu tribal lady in the place of this nun?

    Excellent reply Mr.Nagesh Nayak.Infact these people are not bothered about flight of women living in mangalore but showing undue concern for the rape of this converted Nun , which is quite amusing. They would not have bothered to comment had sheen been a hindu tribal. This is called hypocracy to height.

    I donot understand the reason for pouring symphaty for this nun from karnatak people as she belongs to some other state. Rapes do take place everywhere, which are uinhuman and needs to be punished severly. you ppl trun blind eye to such cases but make a big hue and cry when a converted nun is raped. Had your concern been same had she been not converted to christianity? NO. oh god give some wisodm to these frustrated people who have no work to do other then spew hatred and poison.

    Rajesh why do you think that your personal fear and prejudices as the priorities of the nation? And after all why they have to be? Didn't you treat the death of Swami Laxmananda Saraswati as the priority when it was not the priority of the nation? Why then you went on rampage? If your Swamiji's death can be your priority, what is wrong in we making the rape of our nun as our priority? Weren't newspapers flashing his news in headlines for months together and convicting Christians for his death even after the Maoists accepted responsibility for his death? So why does Daiji's stance prick you? Is it because your schemes and sins are brought to the fore at an international forum? You cannot deny the fact that Naxalism, terrorism and conversion have resulted beacuse of denying respect to human beings. They are consequences of denying justice, either social, economical or religious. The depressed may not revolt, but the oppressed surely revolt when it becomes too much of a thing for the nerve to hold on. Where justice is denied, peace is usually troubled and where peace exists, injustice does not make its domain.

    I did not understand the comments from Rajesh Barbadose. This Gururam Patra is as bad any terrorist. Equally bad as the terrorist who had a training camp in Coorg. Both types has associates and they are most ugly people found in human race. Beacuse VHP leader was killed by somebody, his supporters can not retaliate by raping innocents!     Such horrible act is not pardonable, govt should bring strict laws against rapist. If life time imprisonment or hang till death decision is given by judge, it should be encouraged so that in future criminals will think twice before doing anything.
