Council Polls Force a Week’s Break to Karnataka Legislature Session

Bangalore, Dec 14: The winter session of Karnataka state legislature, which began on Monday, was adjourned to meet on again December 21 after a week’s break to facilitate members to take part in the campaigning for the 23 seats from the 19 constituencies from the local authorities constituencies scheduled for December 18.
Both houses of the state legislature, which commenced their winter sitting this morning, paid homage to former Union Minister B Shankaranand, former State Minister D T Jayakumar, former MLAs Gopal Mukund Kanade, E Nanje Gowda, N Nagaraju and Sharanappa Bhairi, who passed away recently, and also to renowned photographer T S Satyan, who died on Sunday at Mysore and also internationally acclaimed yakshagana arstiste Keremane Mahabala Hegde. Members in both houses recalled the contributions of the deceased leaders in various fields.
The two houses of the Legislature also mourned the death 226 persons in the floods that hit north Karnataka in September-October and also the people who died in the floods in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
The Assembly and the Council would now meet for seven days from December 21 to 24, and from December 29 to 31 as per a decision taken at the joint business advisory committee (BAC) meeting held before the session.
Both Houses of the state legislature will assemble again on December 21, announced state Legislative Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah and Council Chairman Veeranna Mathikatti in the respective houses.
Incidentally, the Upper House has organised farewell to 21 members on December 31 as their tenure would expire on January 6.
In the Legislative Assembly, Speaker K G Bopaiah moved the obituary motion and recalled the services of former legislators in various fields. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, JD (S) floor leader H D Revanna, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri, H S Mahadeva Prasad, Appaji Nadagouda Patil, and T B Jayachandra of the Congress remembered the services of former MLAs and expressed grief over those killed in the natural calamities.
In the Legislative Council, Leader of the House and Home minister Dr V S Acharya and Congress Leader of the Opposition V S Ugrappa spoke on the life and achievements of Shankaranand, Jayakumar, Mahabala Hegde and Satyan.
After the obituary references, both houses were adjourned for the day to meet on December 21.
