Panjim, Apr 20: Over 319 liquor cases worth Rs 9 lac was seized by the excise department in a raid in Mormugao on Sunday. Amit Satija, the excise commissioner commented that a tip-off about the illegal sale of liquor by a packed bottle licensee from his residence in the port town led to the conduction of the raid.

On Sunday, instructions were passed on to the excise superintendents and inspectors to seal all premises, bonds and godowns of wholesale and manufacturing units until the end of the lockdown. This is done as a measure to prevent attempts to sell liquor illegally and secretively.

The order was passed after receiving complaints by people and intimation received from certain government departments about the illegal sale of alcohol by some wholesale units, said the commissioner. Similar actions shall be taken against retail operators too, in case complaints are lodged against them, he added.

Since the lockdown, Satija asserted that they have booked 11 cases and suspended licences.
