Mangaluru, Apr 22: Officials worked in tandem to meet the need of a girl student suffering from a leg fracture, and ensured that the girl student from Kerala safely reached her home. The student identified as Devika (18) is a BBM degree student of a private college at Ullal here.
Devika had rented a house near the college where she stayed with three other girl students. On April 16, she was conversing with friends on the first floor when she suddenly fell to the ground floor. Following which she suffered a fracture in the leg. She was then taken to a private hospital nearby where she was sent back with legs wrapped in bandage cloth. However, Devika continued to experience unbearable pain. As she was shedding tears due to the injury her friends contacted Devika's mother over cellphone but because of lockdown, it was very difficult for the girl to get back home. Devika is a native of Idukki in Kerala, which is about 400 km away from Mangaluru. Her father is no more, and her mother, an Anganwadi worker, is the lone breadwinner of the family.
An acquaintance from Idukki contacted the reporter of a Malayalam publication here and sought his help. The reporter took the student to K S Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte in his car and got her examined there. The doctors found that the bone in one of her legs had suffered extensive damage while the other leg had a normal injury. He prescribed her a month of constant rest.
The journalist then contacted a Kerala government official whom he knew, through whom Idukki district collector H Dinesh was approached with a request for help. Local leaders also brought this issue to the notice of Kerala energy minister M M Mani. The minister supported the district collector in drawing a plan to drop the girl at her native place.
On Monday afternoon, Devika was sent to Talapady in an ambulance. From there, an ambulance from Kanhangad took her to Idukki. On the way, a local doctor Dr Shaqir arranged for light refreshment for the people in the ambulance at Mogralputtur while lunch was provided at Kanhangad by local municipal president V V Ramesh.
