Ra 65,000 cr needed to feed the poor: Rajan to Rahul

New Delhi, Apr 30 (IANS): Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan in a video talk with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, streamed by the party, said that country needs Rs 65,000 crore to feed the poor.

Raghuram Rajan said, "Rs 65,000 crore is needed to feed the poor and India can afford it as the GDP is Rs 200 lakh crore," adding that "Social harmony is a public good; we cannot afford to have our houses divided at the time when challenges are big".

He said that there should be efforts to give money to the poor through DBT, MGNREGA, old age pension and also supporting through PDS.

Raghuram Rajan said that India needs to be cleverer in lifting the lockdown as it has limited capacity to feed the poor.

"There are ways country can take advantage but I think there will be no positive impact of this situation as there may be rethinking in global economy."

"There will be strategic change but these types of pandemic have rarely any positive effects in general," said Rajan.

When Rahul Gandhi asked the former RBI Governor about the testing capacity for coronavirus, Rajan said India needs at least 5 lakh testing per day.

The Congress leader also exchanged views about the authoritarian way the situation in the country is being handled, as more centralisation is happening contrary to liberalisation and decentralisation.

While Rahul Gandhi asserted that southern states are doing better in strengthening the panchayati raj system, northern states are more for centralisation of power.

Very serious talks by Rahul Gandhi and Raguram Rajan.

This actually should have been done by rulers of this country but none of us know what actually they are doing. This interview is quite useful for a common man to understand the impact and possible corrective actions. When expert is talking even the ruler should listen even though he is not directly involved in the interview.

All these talks are for the benefit of the country and those making fun of such serious discussion at this time of crisis either have not understood the seriousness of the situation or just doing politics. PM need to be assertive and communicate with the people. Just spending his time making phone calls to old Jana Sangha members will not help the country. He need to speak to experts and prepare the blue print for the revival.

He need to proactive and speak to people through Press Conferences. I still don't understand why he is afraid of Press Conferences?

Wise and matured discussion. I watched it live and there was no editing when it's live. Rahul answered very wisely when Mr.Raghuram Rajan reversed the questions to him about his father's Mr.Rajiv Ghandis regime. Absolutely mature and wise.

    Dear Bhandarkar,

Do not get upset. If you know the facts please write here. I am eager to know what our PM is doing to come out of the crisis. Just because Rahul Gandhi was part of the interview do not dismiss it. There is no harm in considering some suggestions if it is good for the country.

It is not important if the interview is edited or not. Substance is more important. Leaders are not decided what mistakes they do in pronunciation. If somebody says Vishesh Vushweshwar Vishwa Rayaa Aiyaa, Doland Trump, a square, b square, bracket square whole square, MRS and MR is not important. Leadership is the ability of the person to take lead during crisis, take everyone along and instill confidence in the people.

Rahul Gandhi is Congress Leader and not mine. Our leader is supposed to be PM but we do not know what our leader is doing. Ground reality is he has not taken migration workers or Daily wage labourers into consideration when he announced lockdown. He left them to mend themselves without protection of food or finance.

Lockdown is just a temporary measure to buy time to prepare for the bigger fight against the disease in terms of identifying the clusters and testing. There needs to be balance between lockdown and economy as lockdown cannot go indefinitely.

Our leader need to speak up and come out with the blueprint. Being in opposition if Rahul Gandhi is taking initiate we need to welcome it. Our leader can consider the suggestions if it is good for the country.

Bhandarkar, let us speak on the subject and not to make of fun of somebody just because WhatsApp university has made many fake messages to demean somebody. Remember truth will prevail finally.

Good Initiative of Mr. Rajan, He has done his part to inform how much it would cost and how Indian can support to his citizen on the current situation. If every Indian join hand along with Current government we can survive from current pandamic situation.

Food and Medicine alone with Unity we can face this challenge.

The pragmatic question is ,What is next?
Lets be practical . Okay, Rajan speaks to Rahul . So what would the Indians get from this? How would this discussion impact the Indians, ? What is or should be the course of action and who would initiate this? How will this be reccommended or communicated to the central Govt? Will this duo ensure that?. I ask these Qs, because both these individuals are irrelevant to the Indian state as on date.

The video is heavily edited. the total videos time duration is 6 and half minute. ..Raghuram rajans clock started at 9.20 and after 4 minutes of the video it showed 10 o clock 😂😂. You have to be very carefull when you sell such things for public consumption. Even a 3year old kid plays with videos these days.

Do you think being a RBI Governor under Modi is easy ? Who would agree for DeMo ? Rajan completed his term and left. Did not even had a desire to continue another term. Why was his successor left then ? If it was so easy ?

Dictators come in many avtars. One avtar is winning election and then doing your own will. Taking decisions without consulting the Parliament. We have many such instances in India.

    Muthu Swamy,

Mr. Modi has been on his heels from 2014 to prove that the assets of Gandhi family is all that is stolen from the public of India. He did not bring out one proof so far and the public is eagerly waiting. What is more interesting is, the family is still in India and is getting richer year after year. How ? By their regular income. From where does it come ? Well, by Mr. Modi's generosity. He increased their pay by 200%

Where does this increased percentage come from ? From mine and your salary. Wait... wait... Not only the Gandhi family members (2 MPs) - the whole battalion in the parliament gets this, including Modi/Shah. Therefore, please don't complain. If at all you can do something, write to the PM to undo this increment. Your contribution, if you succeed, will be immensely regarded, very thankfully.
