Gulki Joshi on the most intense role of her career

Mumbai, May 1 (IANS): Actress Gulki Joshi is returning to theatre after almost two years, with "Purush". She says it has turned out to be "the most intense role" of her career.

The tele-play, which also stars Ashutosh Rana, is a social commentary on the universal issues of gender politics, patriarchy and caste discrimination. "Purush" features Rana as a politician Gulab Singh and Gulki as the resilient social activist Ambika Bhagawat.

"For me, ‘Purush' is a very personal story because I identify with Ambika and mirror a lot of the principals she believes in," Gulki said.

"It is the most intense role I have played in my career, which was really difficult initially but also satisfying in the end. I hope audiences respond to the play with the same passion and hard work that went into making it," she added.

Set in Meerut in a middle-class Brahmin home, the play creates a layered narrative with the plot exploring a number of ideologies thatwhich men and women grapple with. Ambika not only fights for herself but also stands up for other women who are subjected to injustice or oppression. She leads a fight against the corrupt and misogynistic Gulab Singh.

The Zee Theatre tele-play is a Hindi adaptation of a legendary Marathi play. "Purush", which also stars Paromita Chatterjee, Deepak Qazir, Kranti Prakash Jha and Neha Saraf, premiered on Dish TV and D2H Rangmanch Active on Maharashtra Day (May 1).
