Congress tells Modi: Spell out plans on lockdown exit, economic revival

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday questioned the Centre on a host of issues and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi come forward to inform the countrymen on his government's plans to deal with the ongoing coronavirus crisis and economic revival.

The opposition party' stand comes a day after the central government announced to extend the nationwide lockdown for two more weeks till May 17.

Addressing the media through videoconference, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said: "Yesterday, the Home Ministry announced to extend the lockdown for two more weeks. Neither the Prime Minister came nor the Home Minister; and not even a single officer came forward. Only an order came for lockdown 3.0."

He alleged that Modi and his government had not informed the country about the ways to come out of coronavirus crisis and how they will alleviate the people's miseries.

Firing salvos at Modi, the Congress leader said: "Will we see another lockdown? When will the lockdown finally end? What is the 'exit strategy' from lockdown 3.0?"

The Prime Minister must come forward and address the citizens and enlighten them on the way ahead, the Congress leader demanded.

Accusing the central government of not handling the issue of stranded migrant labourers in a humane manner, Surjewala urged the Centre to ferry these people to their native states in sanitised trains for free, apart from providing them food en route.

He also questioned the government about the plans to revive the Indian economy.

"What are the thoughts and policy of the Prime Minister for the nation? What is the road map, not only for harvesting and grant of MSP to farmers but also for sowing of the next kharif crops and availability of fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides? What are the arrangements for ensuring livelihood and ration for over 40 crore urban and village poor and labourers? What is the relief package for 4.25 crore MSMEs that generate 11 crore jobs?

"How do you propose to ensure 'jobs and pay protection' for the middle class and salaried people? What is the strategy for revival and restarting tourism and hotel industry, textile industry, construction industry, automobile and IT industry, transport and aviation industry and other such sectors?" Surjewala questioned.

He said that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi have repeatedly spoken about immediate announcement and implementation of a 'Financial Action Plan Part-2' and have written a number of letters to the Prime Minister to give concrete suggestions.

Surjewala reiterated the seven demands raised by the two top Congress leaders and said the fight against Covid-19 shall be united and not unitary.

On Saturday, India's total coronavirus cases climbed to 37,336, with 1,218 deaths and 9,950 others cured and discharged.

This man surjewalla had lost 2 elections in within 6 months of each other i.e. one for the parliament and second one for the state assembly. He is only job is to bark whenever his master /madam order him to do so. His master/madam are a frustrated lot just thinking about the fortune they could have made if they were in power during the time the present pandemic.May be cursing Modiji for his policy of 'na khavoonga, na khane doonga"

CONgress should first get out of the opposition mode and ally with the Government to tide over the pandemic! Look at European nations, they all are working as one, nearer home look at Kerala, same CONgress is supportive of Pinnarayi.

You mean congress should start in partner with the govt 'Oppostion Cares Fund' without CAG audition, should be equal partner with govt on increasing fuel prices when all the countries of the world are reducing the price, should be partner-in-crime to charge migrant jobless poor labour class workers to pay exhorbitantly high bus fares to go home, should forgive ministers when they don't have answers in the parliament for writing off financial fugitive's loans, should cooperate with govt while defaming and openly instigating communal violance by Arnab Goswami, should appreciate govt action to segregate Muslim patients and others in the hospital. These are some of the cooperation measures you are expecting which are anti constitutional so congress will not do it.

Why don't Congress party don't understand Modi's degree and lock down exist strategy is the most guarded secret.

The Right to Information (RTI) Act on April 21, 2020 seeking information on 12 points from the PMO refuses to give details on PM-CARES and also regarding the implementation of the national lock-down and how this decision was reached.

The PMO has also refused to make public details of high-level meetings on COVID-19 and on the decision to implement a lockdown, the correspondence between the Ministry of Health and the PMO in this regard, and files related to COVID-19 testing.

In addition, PMO has refused to make documents related to the PM-CARES Fund public. The fund was set up to receive financial aid from the public to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The Covid-19 cases are raising despite 'clapping' and 'light candle'. Now Indian Air-force is asked for public entertainment to shower flower petal over the hospital even though the death rate is keep increasing.
In China Army units of medical team has relentlessly worked till the cases have dropped. In India after President Donald Trump flower show now Air force wasting time and money.

See the plans in Lock down 3.0.
That in itself is graded exit from Lock Down.
All issues are being addressed on the ground ,not by giving suggestions sitting on an Armchair and having video conversations with a Raghu or somebody.Sit and point out mistakes only.If that is the only job then you give wings to imagination also.
    What addressing Press Conferences ?
Haven't you read his Saptha Sutras?
The initiatives of RBI ...Its stimulus package, reducing reverse repo rates.
The second round of putting money into Jan Dhan accounts have started.Till recently India had never heard of Direct Money Transfer into accounts.According to Rajivji only 95 paisa out of a rupee meant for the poor was being looted !
The PDS system has been galvanised like never before.
The cut in gas prices, free distribution of cylinders to the poor, are among many other initiatives...
What migrant labor everytime as if you care for them ? What did you do in Mumbai ?
See how the Govt. is competently handling their travel issues.
What has been your party' s contribution ?Not even competent to beat a ' Ghanta'..Could not even light a Diya to stand in solidarity with the country !
    Baat Kartein hey !

    @ Bhandarkar,

Cool down. This is democracy and there will be ruling party and opposition party. Opposition party needs to highlight the problems and they are doing exactly that.

When ruling party sleeps they need to wake up. Otherwise people may revolt and that will be big problem. You may be only seeing messages from WhatsApp university. You need to see other messages well. Now ask the people who are really affected. Deep Jalao, thali bajavo is not the solution.

PM seems to be confused and government is not doing enough. He need to step down and make way to Nithin Gadkari. He is best bet in this scenario.

We fully agree with you, a opposition should be constructive during Covid 19 epidemic crisis. work hand in hand with govt, than just playing politics. Learn from opposition parties around the Globe, especially Western countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy (Italy has learnt from their mistakes) etc. Only USA has completely failed.
    Let common sense prevail.

Sujrewalaji, in these hard times, please be a part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Ask the intelligent educated Rahulji, he must be able to suggest a strategic, pragmatic, charismatic, innovative plan.

The Prime Minister needs to address a Press Conference so that he can allay all the fears and clarify all the issues facing the nation because of the Corona Virus. Leaders of countries across the world have been adressing Press Conferences regularly except our PM.

This is healthy sign that the principal opposition party is bringing out the people's problems and pressurizing government to spell out the plan. Unfortunately the main stream media is not doing justice to the job as such issues should be brought out so that the government takes the notice of the same.

Supporters of BJP may get upset by this but it is good for the country to keep the government on the toes. So far the government is mum on the actions of the exit plan and this is really making the people impatient. Migration workers and Daily wage workers have reached the point of breakdown and for them survival is the main issue than the Corona itself. Slowly this is effecting the middle class and pay cuts have already been announced. They are not sure if they are getting salary in the coming months.

MSME companies cannot make the future plans unless government announce the economic stimulus to restart. There has to be concessions to these companies, otherwise those may close down. Government need to be proactive with proposals before the people so that the confidence level can be gained.

Prime Minister need to have dialogue with opposition parties and experts in different fields. There has to be planning committee with all these people to move forward. PM needs to speak to the people otherwise it may send a wrong signal. He needs to assure all the citizens irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Any delay may make things worse and the people may revolt.

Along with this, testing of the virus need to be increased in Orange and Red zones

Word of caution here sir. Modi is very good in spelling out anything you want to hear but its implementation by deeds is yet to be seen or felt?!?!?!?!.... If you see his hand picked or won by EVMs cabinet ministers, top govt officials, economists, strategists and planners you should have a fairly good idea what kind of ideas they normally put together. Usually contrary to your suggestions.
