Plan is to restart the competition in June: LaLiga President

Madrid, May 4 (IANS): Spanish LaLiga President Javier Tebas is optimistic that the current season, stopped midway because of the COVID-19 pandemic, can restart in June.

The football matches in the country have been stopped since March 12 in wake of the pandemic that has hit the entire world.

Basic training was allowed to resume in Spain on Monday after the government watered down some of the lockdown measures that had been imposed since mid-March.

"We have time, there's no need to rush. But our plan is to restart the competition in June," Tebas was quoted as saying by LaLiga over the weekend.

"We have time until June 28th, we were keen to start training. Let's wait and see the exact date we can start training.

"But now at least I can foresee finishing the league, which is very important for us," he added.

The country's Prime Minister had stated that steps are being taken to end lockdown measures slowly as Spain enters the 'de-escalation' phase with respect to the effect of the virus.

France's top-tier Ligue 1 and second division Ligue 2 were suspended due to the pandemic.

Netherlands too have called off this season of the Eredivisie without naming any champions and without teams getting relegated.
