Covid-19 toll 68 in Bengal: Home Secy


Kolkata, May 5 (IANS): The death toll in Covid-19 pandemic rose to 68 in West Bengal, up by fresh seven cases in the last 24 hours, State Home Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay said on Tuesday.

Bandopadhyay told a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna: "The total number of active cases across the state stood at 940 to date. They are undergoing medical treatment now. The total number of people affected by the Covid-19 is 1,344 so far in Bengal of which as many as 264 have been discharged so far. As many as 85 people were affected in the last 24 hours."

The Home Secretary said at least 5,561 people detected with Covid-19 symptoms are in home-quarantine now.

The total number of containment zones in West Bengal is 516 of which 318 are tlocated only in state capital Kolkata.

The building of Jorabagan traffic guard in northern part of Kolkata was declared as one of the containment zones in Kolkata, the first such government building which has been declared as such. The traffic guard office was declared as a containment zone after a city traffic police sergeant was hospitalised with Covid-19 and four other officials were asked to go to home quarantine with corona positive symptoms.

The police said the officers are functioning at the traffic guard with masks and also maintaining all necessary guidelines of social distancing while on duty.
