Charging expats, NRIs to fly back is cruel: Congress

New Delhi, May 5 (IANS): The Congress lashed out at the Centre on Tuesday for its decision to "impose excessive costs" on NRIs flying in special flights from the Covid affected countries, calling it an "inhumane act".

"It was due to the protests by a large number of expatriates and their relatives as well as the general publics, over the past few days, the Central government has taken the decision to bring back our citizens from abroad," said Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.

He added that those who are most in trouble now have come forward to fly in special aircraft in accordance with the government's directives to return home somehow. However, he claimed it is "cruel" that the Central government has taken "advantage of this plight of expatriates by increasing the price of air fares up to three times".

Venugopal called it "inhumane" while urging the Centre to take urgent steps to provide free travel to the most vulnerable, the unemployed, the sick and the pregnant and others on normal fare.

The travel from other Covid affected countries would begin in a phased manner from May 7, according to a communique from the Home Ministry. However it can be availed against payments for the travel.

Earlier, the Congress targeted the Centre claiming that the government is charging migrant labourers who are being brought home through special trains with its interim chief Sonia Gandhi offering to foot their bills which evolved into a political storm.

In normal circumstances not to give anything free. It's spoiling them.
But now the NRI' s are in trauma, lost jobs and money all of sudden.
    Future also is very uncertain.
When Govt writes off loans and interest of massive defaulters, why it can't be considerate with normal people like NRI' s and migrant labourers?

Most Gulf NRIs are Congress, or atleast non-bjp (except for a few bhakaths), so why Bania Janatha Party will give anything free?

Air fare include Airline charges + govt taxes. So, Govt should only collect basic airline charges and should not collect taxes at this difficult time. But, as per the airfare announced, it is more than double the normal time airfare!

Is govt want to make profit by increasing airfare? It would be unfair with expats!!!

At any point of time, "No achche din" for Indian expats.

It is easy to say and the amount involved will be in crores. May be the most affected labour category class waiting to go back having lost jobs may be given the option to avail the air tickets throuh Indian Embassy in respective countries but not all. Keralites who stayed for years and built properties back home should not be given any rebate.

Only poor, Not able to settle overseas, Persons Who loved relatives in India so much and sent all the earning back home to India and it helped the Government with much needed foreign exchange only want to return to India. These people are without job & money for the last 2 months in foreign land. It is bad to charge fee for these people. Indian Air force & Army has Cargo Plans, Indian Navy has Navy ships and India has Air India. Government should bring these stranded Indians back for free and give them financial help to re settle in India. These are Indian Citizens, Our brothers & sisters. Rest of India should follow Kerala Model in taking care of it fellow Citizens.

Need of the hour is immediate sacking of this incompetent BJP govt and launch congress back as ruling govt with Rahul Gandhi as PM for atleast 3 months till things come back to normal. BJP govt can not handle this. We have seen congress handling the same situation very effectively and no cost to the victims. Let it begin right now.

Show me the khangress handled which situation effectively?
We have seen the 2008 crisis resulted in lakhs of crores NPAs in banks and BJP has to pay for this
Regarding oil crisis khangress action resulted in laks of crores loss to the Govt oil marketing companies. Now under BJP all omc r running effeciently even after providing free gas connection to poor
All actions taken should be in the interest of long time view and short time view
Because of this free culture khangress made India poor.

Are you okay Bhandarkar? What you really want to convey?

Opposition party is asking not to charge the people who are in distress. Is it wrong?

Now they are not in power, otherwise they would not have charged for the flight. Remember the days during war at Kuwait. Lakhs of people were airlifted free of cost creating history that India is concerned about people. Nothing is more important than Indian citizens.

Now we have a government which is completely deaf and not bothered about their citizens even within India. We all know you are a staunch supporter of Modi but have the courage to call spade is spade.

Otherwise it implies that, for you country and citizens are not important but the leader.

Shame on you. If you can not help people at this crucial times then admit your incapablity, put your hands up, hold your ears and step down. Let Rahul Gandhi continue doing his good governance.
