Mangalore, Jan 6: A group with connections to the sand mining mafia attacked a cameraman of TV9 channel and his brother as they were travelling home.

The attack is believed to be in retaliation to a news story telecast on the channel recently.

As per the information from the victim, cameraman Wilfred D’Souza, he was kidnapped by a group of men along with his brother Anil D’Souza while he was on his way home.

Both victims were in a car and the vehicle was stopped near a village called Bakrabail, Kaje, under Manjeswar police station. They were confined to a remote place and attacked with lethal weapons for telecasting the news on sand mining.

The group kept the brothers in the remote place for nearly two hours and left after the police came to the spot in search of the victims after their colleagues complained.

Wilfred, a resident of Pervai in Bantwal taluk, has been working as a cameraman in the city over the past two years.

The two victims were admitted to a hospital near Manjeswar after they were freed by the gang.

Both the Dakshina Kannada district police and Manjeswar police have treated the matter seriously and an investigation is on.

TV9 most of time is arrogant in repoting news. It magnifies the issues & create unwanted hatred. News should be conveyed but at the same time it should be in health of society & should not create damage to society. A good example is of News in Tv9 1-2 years back shot in Kankanady, wherin a couple moving in scooter where projected as engaged in malpractise. Consequence, the couple stirked the Mangalore TV9 office.

While the Media camerman of TV9 and his brother has been attacked by the mafia men group for exposing them, equally the Media and the public should pressurise the law enforcing authority to arrest and severly punish all those involved for the attack along with carrying out their illegal activities. Bravo! Wilfred and Anil.

Sand is a natural resource, like any other item, this too belongs to all of us. It is incorrect that one gets hold of it and sells to make profit illegally because it is a taxable item. Moreover, the mafia-men have no concern about adverse affect of their digging anytime/anywhere on the surrounding areas - it may cause a landslide. Karnataka govt. has banned its sale to Kerala but these mafia are smuggling it across. TV9 has done a good job by reporting about it earlier and this happened while they were preparing a second detailed report. We must unite and protest against this smuggling. Good job D'Souza brothers.
