Punjab ex-DGP files anticipatory bail plea in 29-yr old abduction case

Chandigarh, May 8 (IANS): Two days after Punjab's former Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini, once considered a blue-eyed boy of militancy-era police chief K.P.S. Gill, was booked in connection with a 29-year-old abduction case, he moved a trial court on Friday seeking an anticipatory bail.

A court in Mohali has issued a notice to Punjab Police, asking them to submit the complete records in the abduction case, and listed the matter for next hearing on Saturday.

A case of kidnapping, wrongful confinement, criminal conspiracy and under other Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Saini and seven other policemen on Wednesday, on the complaint of victim Balwant Singh Multani's brother.

The kidnapping case was related to a bomb attack on Saini by Khalistan Liberation Force militants in 1991. At that time, he was the Senior Superintendent of Police and was posted in Chandigarh. He survived with injuries but his three security personnel were killed.

The complainant claimed that the cops abducted, tortured and killed his brother in police custody.
