Women issues' redressal just a call away in Himachal

Shimla, May 12 (IANS): A unique initiative in a subdivision in Himachal Pradesh has shown a way to resolve issues related to the women ranging from personal to health amid lockdown.

At the initiative of the district administration, a women's helpline -- Mahila Suvidha Kendra -- has been set up for people of Palampur and it has proved effective to redress grievances, the government said.

Its uniqueness is that it focuses on women's problems and is also being managed by women only. The helpline has produced meaningful results and is playing an important role in spreading awareness amongst the women.

The helpline can be reached at 76499-86000.

Naib Tehsildar Kiran Chauhan and her team members -- Shivani and Deepika from Netaji Subhash Nursing College -- are providing assistance and resolving issues just on a phone call.

Another feature of this helpline is that within 24 hours of receiving the call, arrangements are being made to supply goods, medicines, etc., to help the women in need.

With this, the women have not only received the convenience of sitting at home but this helpline has also increased their faith as problems are being resolved on a single phone call, the government said in a statement.

Calls are also received for health-related issues.

The helpline has benefited dozens of women like Deepika resident of Punnar, Kanika from Dhati, Deepika Butel from Tanda, Kaushalya from Kural, Sankalpana Devi from Gopalpur and Pooja Devi resident of Mallahu.

The Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) Palampur said people are staying indoors owing to the lockdown. They comprise a large number of single and elderly women.

He said other helplines have also started in Palampur to cater to other sections of society. But the helpline for women has yielded meaningful results.
