International marathon in Bali cancelled due to COVID-19

Jakarta, May 12 (IANS): Organisers have aborted an international marathon championship which was initially scheduled to be staged later this year in Indonesia's Bali resort island due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The 2020 Maybank Marathon was previously slated to be held on August 30 with domestic participants and foreign athletes, Esti Nugraheni, Head of the Corporate and Brand Communication of Maybank Indonesia, the organiser of the race, said in a statement on Monday, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Maybank Marathon has been held annually since 2013, but its cancellation this year does not impact on its title as a World Athletics Bronze Label race, it added.

Last year, nearly 12,000 runners from 50 domestic and foreign teams took part in the 2019 Maybank Marathon which took place in Indonesia's Bali resort island, according to the statement.

The COVID-19 outbreak in Indonesia has forced the authorities to apply partial lockdowns in several big cities which restrict people's activities.

So far, the COVID-19 has killed 991 people and infected 14,265 others across Indonesia including Bali, the Health Ministry announced on Monday.
