Vijay Mallya can now be extradited in 28 days

New Delhi/London, May 14 (IANS): Indian fugitive and former liquor baron Vijay Mallya on Thursday lost his appeal in the UK Supreme Court against his extradition to India, clearing a major roadblock for the Narendra Modi government to bring him back in the next 28 days.

The former parliamentarian, who ran India's largest spirits company, United Spirits, and founded the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, faces charges of fraud and money laundering worth $1.3 billion. He left India in March 2016 under the pretext of personal reasons.

Mallya has defrauded at least 17 Indian banks, drawing loans which he allegedly routed to gain full or partial stake in about 40 companies abroad.

As per sources in London, now that Mallya's legal options in the UK have exhausted, he may still attempt to pull strings in the office of UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, who gets to have the final say on his extradition to India.

After losing an appeal in the London High Court against an extradition order to India, Mallya had filed an appeal in the UK Supreme Court earlier this month.

Earlier on Thursday, he offered the Central government that he will repay 100 per cent of his loan dues provided the case against him was closed. Mallya, however, said that his repeated offers to repay his dues have been ignored by the Modi government.

Interestingly, he congratulated the Indian government over the Rs 20 lakh crore economic package, which was announced to revive the economy that has taken an unprecedented hit due to the prolonged lockdown necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the legal loophole the absconded liquor baron Vijay Mallya will not be brought to India any time soon. If has enough money to pay for the loan default why do he need to escape India?

The Nirav Modi scam has also given to revisit the history of banking scams in India – everything from Vijay Mallya to the Harshad Mehta scandal.

Mehta, who is the main person associated with Winsome Diamonds and other group companies, is likely the second largest defaulter (nearly Rs 7,000 crore) after Mallya in India Inc’s corporate history. Modi and his uncle have now replaced him.

    1. While defaulter Mallya offered to pay off his loan, why did PM Modi's government has wrote off Mehul Choksi loans when the investigations are still on?
    2. When the PM Modi's central government is going to pursue case of Mehta, who is the main person associated with Winsome Diamonds? Is L’Affaire relation of Mehtar with Adani preventing government?(Mehta is a close relative of the Adani family – his son Suraj, is married to Krupa, Gautam Adani’s niece.

MALLYA WILL TRY TO DELAY HIS EXTRADITION AT UK HOME SECRETARY OFFICE. HE HAS OFFERED TO SETTLE MANY TOMES AND THE GOVERNMENT MUST ACCEPT HIS OFFER. MANY CHEATERS LEFT INDIA AND HAVEN'T OFFERED TO REPAY THE LOAN AMOUNT. COURTS IN INDIA DEFINITELY SUPPORT HIM FOR HIS SETTLEMENT OFFER. HE HAS SUFFICIENT ASSETS IN INDIA.

Better accept his offer and take 100% loan money.
Even if he has brought back in 28 days his lawyers will make sure that the case will run for another 28 years and he'll be out on bail within a month time.

Even if UK court has up held his extradition still there are legal hurdles for his deportation as UK will demand an official assurance in writing from Indian govt that he will be treated humanely and a free, fare and unbiased justice will be done against him which he might appeal again concerning his safety and security. But if he has agreed to pay back everything he has owned and left the country by full knowledge of the govt then where is the case against him in Indian courts???????.. This is just a threat tactics by BJP govt to silence him if at all he spills beans.

I am not worried about Mallya. Everything is going Mallya's way. I am worried about you and BJP govt who will be fully exposed by Mallya once the trial starts BJP govt will be defendant and Mallya plaintiff and you be in the jury stand.
BTW, Modi ruling beyond 2029 says otherwise looking at his face of late.

Good luck! Perhaps your "country colleague Priti may come to your rescue. If you have offered to repay the $1.3 billion, perhaps if you repeat the offer and in fact give to PM;s rescue fund to restart the economy, you might get a full pardon, and continue to live in the UK.

    People,

To be honest, Modiji should follow Trump and send this 20 Lakh Crore bill to Chinese....China has deposits of $ 2 Trillion Dollars in US treasury bonds....So Trump does not have to send bill to Chinese ...here only he can do Account transfer....I believe he will do that before 3rd November...US Presidential elections!!!...

America already deposited unemployment incentive for around 2.5 crores people's account. In UK..around Rs.2.5 lakhs around Stg.Pnd 2500 deposited everybody's account. In Japan around Rs.70000/- around US$ 985 in each and everybody's account. People now required purchasing power to boost economy.

Time will answer your question...my best guess before 3rd of November...wait and watch...

You think US and rest of the world will care for 'Chinese Putgoshi Veto' ???...US does not need any authorization from UN...look at Iran...

Remember 'Jis ki laati...uski Bains'....just kidding...never mind...but China will pay for sure...not only US but rest of the world...

That precisely is the point. Trump doesn't hold 'lati' anymore, just because his best buddy gave in to his threat, don't think China too would follow the suit. Btw, happy with your 1200$ ?

Langanna, it aint 2 trillion, it's 1.1 trillion. And if you think any attempt by Dolan to default the Chinese debt will be taken by China lying down, I think that would be too childish on your part. There's a good article on Forbes on the subject. China aint Mexico, and Dolan's advisors are sure to educate him on why an attempt to default Chinese debt would be insane.

    Possible during Modiji's rule ?

Mallya will come and live in Arthur Road jail till the case drags on - may be five year, ten years and the government will look after him. There will be back and forth arguments to prove/disprove. Finally what the government will get ?

If the government had accepted 100% of his defaulted value, what could be lost ?

Ego - let the BJP govt continue with it's ego. Obviously at the cost of tax payers.
