FM calls Rahul's meeting with migrants a 'dramabaazi'

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday termed the meeting of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with the migrants in Delhi a "dramabaazi" and said the Congress should "be more responsible" and work together with the Centre in the current scenario.

Sitharaman, while addressing the media here, also said that whatever one can do in the current coronavirus crisis is less.

"Not just me, but anyone doing anything is less. I don't want to be involved in any discussion if I have done less or more. I don't see anything can be adequate. No matter how much you do, it will not be enough (in the current situation)," she said in Hindi.

The Finance Minister also said that many solutions can be offered and the Central government has taken on board all the suggestions that have come.

"We worked on something which we think will have an impact."

Saying that nothing will be enough in the situation, she said that is why she believes that these issues should not be politicised.

"We should have this sympathy in our hearts that how we all can work together to get over this situation. We should plan to deal with the situation with dignity and not indulge in fights," she said without taking names.

The Finance Minister also said that the Prime Minister first urged all to stay where they are and asked the states to arrange their food and accommodation.

"All who could help in this provided help. Later, a time came when the Centre and the states decided that the migrants should be allowed to move and so trains were being arranged. If migrants are ready to go, they are given food in trains. It feels sad to see that the migrants are walking on roads to their homes."

Sitharaman also said that if the Congress is feeling so much sad about the picture, "why the state government ruled by Congress or their allies is not demanding more trains for the migrants to ensure all reach home."

Instead of doing that, she added, "They are wasting time in talking to the migrants who are headed home. Better would have been if they carried their children and suitcases instead of just talking," referring to Rahul Gandhi's meeting to the migrants.

The Finance Minister said she is very sad to say, but she is "now using their words and call them "dramabaz". What happened on Saturday was not dramabazi? They wasted the time of the migrants in just talking," she added.

Saying that it is time to join hands, Sitharaman added that she is "requesting the Congress to work together in this situation. It feels sad to see the picture of the migrants."

"Let us speak responsibly, let us deal with our migrants responsibly," Sitharaman urged Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi on Saturday evening went to meet migrant workers camped out near a flyover in Delhi's southeast.

Congress hits back at FM on Rahul, Sonia jibe:

Over the remark made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Congress party hit back saying its 'frivolous' and that the party does not need to 'learn' from the Finance Minister.

Sitharaman during her press conference on Sunday morning said that the Congress is playing politics over the migrants issue and Sonia Gandhi should have asked her chief ministers to help the migrants and Rahul Gandhi should have walked with them when he met migrants and arranged for their transportation.

Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said, "We expect certain degree of seriousness and gravitas when the Finance Minister is addressing a press conference."

"The statement of the Nirmala Sitharaman is frivolous and the Congress president does not need to learn from the finance minister," added Sharma.

He said Congress has stood by the migrants in solidarity as they are citizens of the country and with no food, shelter and money where will the migrants go? The government should apologize to them as their fundamental rights have been violated.

On the issue of Rahul Gandhi meeting migrants in Delhi, Anand Sharma said, "Rahul has right to show his sensitivity. I can understand her frustration, first she damaged the economy, and now...."

Finance Minister Sitharaman had said that Rahul Gandhi should have picked the belongings of the migrants and walked with them.

Sharma hit back and said, "Did Government of India take and look to their pains who are walking hundreds of kilometres. One way preaching is going on. The government is taking decisions arbitrarily without consulting the opposition on the issue of national security of defence and space."

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday termed the meeting of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with the migrants in Delhi a "dramabaazi" (doing drama) and said the Congress should "be more responsible" and work together with the Centre in the current situation.

The best thing RaGa should do now is invite Nirmala S. for a constructive dialogue with him. RaGa and Congress can write down their questions and ask the FM. All the ambiguities can be cleared very professionally. This meeting should be telecasted live. The Cong should ensure that all the doubts in the heads of the people are cleared. It will really project RaGA as an upcoming leader who is serious and Cong as a respectful opposition. This is how an opposition works.
Gimmicks like meeting migrants, showing of torn shirt pocekt, standing in an ATM queue , modi bashing, lashing , tweeting and mocking is a old strategy that has only led the downfall of Congress.

If that was possible all other issues would have been solved and this BJP govt would have ruled with transparency and accountability. Have you seen since 2014 any open discussion, debate, press conference, parliament Q&A session, JPC on any matter from PM till the last BJP activist. Even recently FM and her secretary were mum in the parliament when asked about clarification on certain financial matters but afterwards they were so vocal on one way public fake bhashans and accusing the opposition. Even laws, regulations, articles and rules are passed or overturned over night without the knowledge of opposition and ratifying it in the parliament.

    @ Lenny,

Government instead of doing constructive work during this crisis, spend much time on bashing Rahul Gandhi and Congress. On the contrary Rahul is giving constructive suggestions. Be it PM or Nirmala they all lack experience and not able to have foresight of such crisis. That is why there are chaos everywhere.

Nirmala S. is unfit to be FM and we have seen her dodging the question of a journalist and asking bureaucrats to answer. PM also can only answer the question if question paper is handed over before that too general questions.

Why government is feeling insecure whenever Rahul meets common people? Nobody can take this fundamental right. Again like any other Modi supporter you talked of downfall of Congress which is not important for the common man at this stage.

Expecting the opposition to toe the line of an irresponsible government which is moving directionless is ridiculous. What is shocking is the sensitiveness of the FM being a woman in refusing to see the pain and agony of the migrant workers are undergoing in our country. How many COVID 19 infections happened after Trump's visit to Ahmedabad needs a count.

Dramabaazi is far better than Dhokebaazi ma'am. People can open Amazon packages and find their orders whereas your 20 lakh crores packages are sealed so badly which will not open at any critical condition to help the poor.

Good move by RaGa. He is trying his best and fighting a lone battle to showcase the plight of minorities. Ideally there should be protests held at each and every state and taluk level to drive the Cong message across to the Center. I dont understand why the others are quiet or on coma.?

How can you do the protest when lock-down is there? Even otherwise if it is done during crisis then government may put all the blame to Congress that they are not allowing them to work. You can see just meeting the migrants is a big issue for the government.

Congress should remain proactive during this crisis and they are doing rightly so.

Come to the point madam. First of all this issue is related to HM Amit Shah, so why are you acting and creating a drama as if you are his guest artist?????... Yesterday migrant workers were held in preventive custody as if they are criminals and a threat. So it is a natural parliamentary duty of the opposition to find out about thier grievances, so what is drama in this????.... For you every thing that is related to democracy, parliament, constitution is drama. So it sums in one word that you are Communal and playing Divisive politics because you are anti constitutional.

We are not biased by your name to approve your communal views. We go by the constitution to support anyone no matter what is the name and background. RaGa is least bothered about winning elections by what he is doing, it is immaterial to us whether he wins or loses as he is doing the job of ruling in opposition practically right in front of our eyes without much talking. It is entirely upto the people to decide provided people's mandate is honoured. As it stands now it is quite clear that RaGa being in opposition doing what the ruling BJP should have done. Whereas BJP is unfit to be both in ruling and opposition.
