Eight Santos Laguna players test positive for COVID-19

Mexico City, May 21 (IANS): Eight Santos Laguna players have tested positive for coronavirus in a setback to Mexico's plans to restart football.

The Liga MX, as Mexico's top division is known, said in a statement on Wednesday that the players were diagnosed with the disease after undergoing tests earlier this week. The names of the players were not disclosed, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Eight footballers obtained positive results for COVID-19, however, they are asymptomatic," the statement read, adding that the players would be monitored.

Mexican football was suspended on March 15 because of the global pandemic and there has been no indication of when it might resume.

The Liga MX has asked clubs to undertake regular testing of their players before setting a timetable for a return to competition.

Mexico has had almost 57,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, more than 6,000 of which have been fatal.
