Bangalore, Jan 21: After holding detailed discussions at a meeting convened on the night of Wednesday January 20 in the residence of Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa, the coordination committee of the BJP is learnt to have zeroed in on the state energy minister, K S Eshwarappa, for the post of the state president of the party.
The discussions went on for about 90 minutes, during which, names of different candidates were discussed, and the benefits the party would be able to derive by choosing them, were considered in detail. It is learnt, that the fact that Eshwarppa is a senior leader, is quite aggressive, and belongs to the Kuruba community, the third biggest community in the state, went in his favour. Several members were of the opinion that Eshwarappa would be the best bet to effectively combat the tirades being launched by the leader of the opposition in the assembly, Siddaramaiah, against the BJP.
Siddaramaiah also belongs to the Kuruba community, and it was felt that appointing Eshwarappa would take away Siddaramaiah’s claim to being the only champion of the Kuruba community in the state.
Initially, Eshwarappa was reluctant to sacrifice his ministerial berth. However, he relented after leaders like Yeddyurappa, MP Anant Kumar and outgoing state BJP president, D V Sadanand Gowda, pleaded with him to accept the offer.
It is expected that the party will formally announce Eshwarappa’s name on January 30, in the presence of the national BJP president, Nitin Gadkari.
