Mangalore, Jan 22: “Media without responsibility and ethics is the main reason for the disturbances in the society”, said writer and columnist Shivasundar at a programme organized by the Muslim Lekakara Sangha at Town Hall on Friday January 22.

Speaking at the Muslim Sahitya Award presentation and seminar on ‘Conflicts in Society and Media’, Shivasunder said that the media and media people without a secular and democratic way of presenting news, disturb the economic, social, and political condition of the society.

“Almost all the news and presentations on television channels have bias and are supportive of a company or politician or party. The common man and poor people are sufferers of that news”, he said adding that media nowadays requires more democratic, secular, and social ethics while publishing the news.

A K Kukkila, editor, ‘Sanmarga Weekly’, presented the keynote address on the topic. He said that people only talk about the issues which are published in the media.

“So, media is based on society and society is based on media. The responsibility of avoiding conflicts is higher in media whereas the recent trends are opposite to this”, he added.

MLA U T Khader presented the Muslim Sahitya award to K S Asif Ali Engineer for his book on Indian freedom struggle and Muslims. The award is constituted in the name of former MLA late U T Fareed.

Mohammed Kunhi of Shanthi Prakashana presided over the programme. Hussain Katipalla welcomed all and Abdul Razak Ananthady conducted the programme.
