Lockdown has failed, what's the strategy to open India: Rahul to Modi

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS): Describing the nationwide lockdown as a failure, former Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the relaxation in the lockdown and asked what was the strategy for opening the country.

He also accused the Central government of not supporting the state governments, which have been transferring the money directly into the hands of the farmers and labourers. Addressing a press conference through video conferencing, Rahul Gandhi said, "Two months ago the Prime Minister said that we were going to fight in 21-days a war against novel coronavirus (Covid-19)."

"And now we are in 60 days and we are the only country in the world where the virus is exponentially rising and we are removing the lockdown. It is pretty clear that the aim and the purpose of the lockdown has failed," the COngress leader said.

He said the result of the "failed lockdown" is in front of all. "We in the Congress want to understand what the government's view is. What is their view for going forward? We want to understand what is the strategy?" he said, adding that the Prime Minister and his entire advisory staff, including his top medical people said that the disease would start to reduce in May, whereas the cases are not reducing and are increasing.

"I want to ask the Prime Minister and the government, now that we have a failed lockdown, what is the strategy going forward and what is the strategy as far as opening India is concerned," he said.

He also said, "What are the precautions that they are going to take to curb this disease, and how they are thinking to support migrants, state governments, MSMEs.

"We have great expectations, multiple press conferences about the economic package. The Prime MInister said that the economic package was 10 per cent of GDP whereas the reality is that it is one per cent of GDP and hardly any cash is being given to people," the Congress MP from Kerala's Wayanad said.

Rahul Gandhi said, "Directly we are giving cash to farmers, labourers, but we are not getting any support from the central government. And it is becoming extremely difficult for our states to function without adequate support from central government."

This is Rahul Gandhi's fourth interaction with the media in the last 60 days amid the nationwide lockdown to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. He has interacted twice with the national media and once with the regional media.

    Sir/Madam,
It won't cost to dream. But come out of the dream world to know the reality it takes time. Too accept the truth it is even harder.
For your knowledge WHO has not recommendation to the individual states. It is up to the state to have clear exit strategy which PM Modi's central government has down played and even mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who Twitted way before in February to act.
Today India is marching to 'Dooms day' banks after banks closing or merged and willful defaulters absconding under the watchful eyes of 'Chowkidhar'.
Since Modi came to power banks wrote off Rs 6,60,000 crore worth bad loans. Don't you see this is biggest corruption of the decade?
Don't be in Kumbakarna's slumber sleep. Please wake up and save India.

I just wonder how Rahul or Congress would have done better if they were in the power in preventing the COVID-19. The world including WHO is praising India and here this man is doing his duty in criticizing the government. First of all India is not China and unlike China, our laws are not stringent and we are not as rich as China. The government cannot be blamed entirely as preventing the disease is not an one-man show. Considering the huge and dense population, India has done immensely well. It's the responsibility of each and every person to do his best. Let's also remember that even the advanced countries like the US, the UK, Germany were not able to slow down the disease. Being the Opposition Party leader, he should be aware that his role is not just limited to blame the government.

    @ Joe,

I agree with you there has to be open debate. But it should be between Modi and Rahul. Others in the cabinet may not be aware of the reasons in decisions of Modi. He should also give the details of the interactions with the experts and the delay in implementing the screening at airport and lock-down. I do not know why should he be afraid of press if he has taken correct decisions at correct time.

Piyush Goyal needs to give this suggestion to Modi. If he is not willing for open debate, then he should arrange the Press Conference.

We need to learn from Taiwan which shares its boundary with China controlled the pandemic with timely actions. It sealed down airport very early and as on today less than 450 are effected and only 6 died.

Everywhere in the world by lockdown process, citizens are learning about Corona, how to be safe, and how to avoid getting transmitted. If people learned by this, then this is not a failure, this is a success.
Now people have to decide, they failed or passed by using what they are learned in this period. Government doing its duty in a right and good manner. People demanded(even Rahul) for tarin, bus, flight, and the government has arranged everything with the right protocols. So where is wrong. Now maintain the protocols. Be safe. Now everyone is responsible for their own health.

For the third time in four years, Modi's knee-jerk decision-making has cost India dear. Whether it was demonetisation, GST implementation or the national lockdown, the PM Modi and his advisors could have ensured compliance with minimum dislocation if these decisions had been taken with planning foresight.
We know that this impending lockdown will immediately impact daily wagers, migrant workers and the poorest. Also impacted will be trade and industry. Indians stranded abroad will also be adversely affected. Accordingly, a fiscal package is being immediately worked out to transfer adequate cash to the poorest. For trade and industry, a similar package is being worked out. The RBI will simultaneously work out an appropriate monetary policy for immediate implementation.
While the lockdown’s effectiveness is debatable, its overall impact has been debilitating. By May 3, the country’s economy had suffered losses of $234.4 billion, according to an estimate by British investment bank Barclays. India's unemployment rate is now at a record high of 27.1%, according to the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy (CMIE). A lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus has seen 122 million Indians lose their jobs in April alone. The Indian economy was expected to lose over ₹32,000 crore (US$4.5 billion) every day. More than 80% Indian households lost income during lockdown. India's tourism sector loss doubles to Rs 10 lakh cr, says industry body FAITH. Indian economy has to cover $190 billion output loss.
The top priorities of the BJP is new 'Central vista' project parliament building should be completed by July 2022, which would be in time to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence, and that the entire redevelopment should be completed by March, 2024, which would be before the next general elections, and coincidentally, the 100th anniversary of the RSS.

Some wierds are experts in seeing positives as negative and screaming impotently "I had said that" or "I told you so"!!!

If India is marching towards "Developed" to "developing" country today, it is only by warding off the decades old stinking, shameless corruption, black money, multiple tiers of taxation. And now, world class medical management of the pandemic.

Countries could see a "second peak" of coronavirus cases during the first wave of the pandemic if lockdown restrictions were lifted too soon, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. Yet, our uneducated imported heroes blame it as a failure and are in a hurry for a wild fire.

So, cool down, smr, keep your figures, strategies and supply chains with you and think of your survival in the next few days because India will survive if its honest, well meaning Indians survive.

If you give all these figures then ಪಿಸುಂಟ್ Nirmalakka will get the shock. For the first time we have finance minister who is unable to understand the number of zeroes in 20 lakh Crores.

Subramaniun Swamy himself says neither PM or FM understands the economy. In this time of crisis we require experts like MMS in the command. No point in blaming the present government. They are not qualified for the job.

They failed in taking timely actions and now there is no option than extending lockdown further damaging the economy.

As on date there is no silver bullet solution to the Covid-19. Lock down is an attempt and direction by government to decelerate the spread of the virus. Even slightest non-cooperation to the lock down guidelines make the idea and the efforts of thousands of front line workers in-effective. That is what we are observing not only in India but across the globe. People of the country have to follow self discipline to decelerate the spread. India's social structure is such that implementing discipline in country men is next to impossible. To add fuel to fire, politicians like Pappu, to their own benefit implant thoughts into the minds of less informed mass. Have seen states criticizing central government but none had extended true support to fight this war. Meanwhile on our Pappu ,he is thinking he has got great chance to revival himself (for the 33rd time) by doing non value added activity like discussion with Migrant worker, taxi driver etc. Can he ask what Maharastra govt is doing as he doesn't have guts to blame Maharashtra govt, NCP Chief for administrative failure Accidental CM . His chelas would refute stating 'its not Pappus responsibility as he is a MP of ONLY Waynad'. In that case then he better shut up.

Phekus have destroyed India by playing politics in their every decision pertaining to the country. Country is paying heavy price for electing uneducated lot to the top posts.

We have a PM who delays decisions for political activities, then announces lockdown without understanding its implications, FM announces Economic Stimulus without understanding how it can be implemented.

So we have jokers ruling the country and now they don't want opposition to question their undoing.

24 Feb 2020: Namaste Trump to inaugurate Motera stadium in Choksi-state. 125,000 attended...
