Mangalore, Jan 25: In a first major seizure of fertilizers smuggled out from Mangalore Seaport, the officers of directorate of revenue intelligence [DRI], Mangalore intercepted five containers of export cargo contain 125 metric tonnes of Muriate of Potash or MoP worth Rs 45 lakh at New Mangalore Port here on Monday January 25.

The export containers had originated from Hassan and were destined to Malaysia. The containers had completed all customs formalities and were awaiting shipment in the vessel. On a tip-off, the DRI officials got the containers opened at the port and it was found that goods were in fact MoP, a fertilizer prohibited for export.

MoP is supplied to farmers for agricultural use at a very subsidized price. It is suspected that the fertilizer meant for farmers is diverted from its agricultural use to commercial gain. The officers of DRI have registered an offence case. Further investigation is under progress.

Authorities must first check if the who are entitled for those fertilizers have accepted some cash and gave up the material. Because, we have cases of people BPL dying out of starvation despite of receiving rationed rice. Upon investigating it was found out that they were selling off the rice to buy spurious liquor. Shame ! The nation is doing so much out of taxed money but they have no gratitude and are supporting corruption.

Rice, kerosene, LPG, now fertiliser all in the scams out of Mangalore. If the Customs have cleared the shipment then they are "involved" in the scam. They are supposed to check export shipments before clearing them otherwise why have Customs. Bentonite- from Hassan and going to Malaysia??? The shipping agents too must be in the racket after all they book the cargo. The port authorities seem to be silent spectators to all this happening- what if the cargo was dangerous cargo going into the port area- boom, if it was with a terrorist hand.

There is a big under hand activities happening in the customs department of Mangalore. The customs officers are hands in gloves with the perpetrator of such scam for their personal gain. If the scam is exposed the customs officials pass the blame to the exporters. It is very unfortunate that the exporters, who earn foreign exchange for the country, are punished without looking into the consequences. There is a big conspiracy in the customs department and the higher authority should look into all the earlier scams and re-investigate them.
