Russia Victory Day parade rehearsal to begin on June 8

Moscow, May 29 (IANS): Russias Defence Ministry has started preparing for the Victory Day parade in Moscow and the first rehearsal will take place on June 8, Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces General Oleg Salyukov said on Friday.

The preparations started on May 27 after President Vladimir Putin announced plans to hold the parade on June 24, TASS News Agency quoted Salyukov as saying.

The first rehearsal on June 8 will take place in the first rehearsal in Alabino, and then in Moscow on June 17, he said.

"The rehearsals on Red Square agreed with the Moscow authorities are scheduled for June 17 and June 18 at night. On June 20, the final rehearsal of the parade will take place on the country's main square."

Putin had postponed the Victory Day from its traditional date of May 9 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The military parade is one of the most important events in Russia.

Victory Day marks when the Nazi Germany signed an Act of Unconditional Surrender in a suburb of Berlin on the night of May 8, 1945, Berlin time, which was the early hours of May 9 Moscow time.

It marked the end of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union, an integral part of World War II lasting from 1939 to 1945.

The catastrophic war claimed about 27 million lives of people from the Soviet Union, according to official statistics.
