Harsh Vardhan bats for total ban on tobacco, its products

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS): Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on the World Tobacco Day on Sunday said the battle against tobacco was a personal fight for him and he wanted total ban on it and its products.

"The battle against tobacco is a personal fight for me. As an ENT surgeon, I've been first-hand witness to how it destroys not just the user, but the entire family. I am a votary for a complete ban on tobacco and its products on the World No Tobacco Day to nip the evil in the bud," he tweeted.

According to the World Health Organisation, every year the tobacco industry spends over $9 billion to advertise its products. Increasingly, it's targeting youth with nicotine and tobacco products to replace the 8 million people that its products kill every year.

This year's World No Tobacco Day campaign focuses on protecting children and young people from exploitation by the tobacco and related industry.

The WHO said even during the global pandemic, the tobacco and nicotine industry persisted by pushing products that limited people's ability to fight coronavirus and recover from the disease.

The industry offered free branded masks and doorstep delivery during quarantine and lobbied for their products to be listed as 'essential'. Over 40 million young people, aged 13-15 years, had started to use tobacco, it added.

Remember this line "Baratiyo ka Swagat Pan Parag Se Kijiye - Old Pan Parag Ad, Shammi Kapoor, Ashok Kumar."?

Vikram Kothari is from Gujarat originally but his father Mansukhbhai Kothari settled in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. And set up a huge pan masala business, with Pan Parag becoming a household name in no time. Vikram set up Rotomac later, with the tag line “ 'Likhtey, likhtey, love ho jaye” similar to his father’s Bollywood kind of advertising for the pan masala.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan may be having short time memories on party funds received from tobacco lobby.

After billionaire diamantaire Nirav Modi, another defaulter – Vikram Kothari, the promoter of Rotomac Pen – has also allegedly gone abroad after swindling Rs 3,695 crore from various public sector banks including Allahabad Bank, Bank of India and Union Bank of India.

Kothari has strengthened his Gujarat connections by marrying his daughter into the Adani family. Vinod Adani is Gautam Adani’s elder brother, and was mentioned in the Panama papers. His daughter Krupa married to Jatin Mehata's son in Rs 7000 crores winsome diamond scam.

Marital Connections: Rotomac Kothari, Adani, Panama Papers Et Al.One married into the Ambani’s family, the other into the Adani family.

How will BJP ban 'Tobacco', when it has marital connection who sponsors fund to the party?

    Jai Hind

As an ENT surgeon don't you think even alcohol is equally bad for health, families and society?????..... Yet your own govt opened liquor shops even during lock down to collect blood money from innocent poor people but your govt did not bother to give these poor people free tickets, free food and shelters??????....It is same as saying if you really worship Gau Matha then don't slaughter Gau Matha in your own slaughter houses too and export its meat besides banning slaughtering and beef consumption in the country.
