Pregnant elephant's murder: This is not Indian culture, says Government

New Delhi, Jun 4 (IANS): Days after a pregnant elephant died in Kerala after it was fed a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers, the central government on Thursday took a serious note of the incident and said that it will be investigated properly.

Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar took to the micro-blogging site, to show his resentment. "Central Government has taken a very serious note of the killing of an elephant in Mallapuram, #Kerala. We will not leave any stone unturned to investigate properly and nab the culprit(s). This is not an Indian culture to feed fire crackers and kill," he wrote.A

On May 27, a 15-year-old pregnant pachyderm fell victim to an inhumane act after a pineapple filled with powerful firecrackers offered by a man exploded in her mouth when she chomped on it. It suffered serious injuries on its tongue and mouth. Later she walked into a river and waited for three days as its life was slowly snuffed out.

On Wednesday, the Environment Minister sought a report on the death of the elephant and said that stern action will be taken against the culprits.

Samuel Pachuau, the Wildlife Warden of the Silent Valley National Park, said: "It was on the 23rd of last month we came to know about this incident, when the elephant was spotted near a water source outside the National park."

According to him, the culprits had placed firecrackers inside a pineapple which was then eaten by the wild elephant. Apparently a practice in the area to shoo away the straying wild.

"We summoned a veterinarian and later on the 25th an elephant expert David Abraham came and examined and explained to us the grim situation," said Pachuau. From the examination, it looked like a two week wound and there were worms in the wound.

He added, "We informed the Forest officials about the prognosis and two days later the elephant died in a sitting posture in the water."

In the autopsy, it was found that the upper and lower jaw, teeth and tongue of the elephant were badly damaged. The cause of death is due to aspiration of the lungs as it was filled with water.

The incident has attracted huge condemnation on social media, where the memes showed the mother elephant saying it was her fault to trust the human race, while the unborn child in her womb kept asking: "What is my fault, Ma?"

Destroying forest in name of development have killed so many animals now because one incident politics has started this has always happened and will happen in future till our greediness is not stoped
I sincerely request to cancel all the mining projects, railway projects and development project which is destroying forest land, also sand extradition should stop and the total ban should be forced so we can save our rivers.
let us please join and start from our state requesting govt to cancel Hubli- Ankola railway line which is going to cause a huge impact on environment and forest.

So sad. Killing Pregnant elephant is like murdering human being. Same law and punishment should be given to the culprit for dual murder. This is not humanity.

This killing of a pregnant elephant is unbelievable but very true. Whoever killed that elephant in such a inhuman way should be caught as soon as possible. They deserve the most harshest punishment by which way they will suffer throughout their lifetime.

The killing of the Elephant is Certainly a very inhuman and dastardly act and those responsible should be punished severely. I am sure the Kerala Government would have already initiated the process . What is surprising is the extra enthusiasm by the Central Government in this case when it wasn’t bothered about the recent plight of the migrants, who faced so much hardships and even death (after being abandoned by their wealthy employers) while returning to their home town.

Mr. Javedkar a known sycophant chooses to speak only when it suits him, obviously this incident happened in Mallapuram district and I leave our enlightened readers to figure out the nuances.... May the Almighty save our good country.

All the wild Animals in any state are the assets of the whole country. If the central minister had remained silent, he would have proved unworthy for the chair. Here the minister has registered his voice. The minister must further move ahead in finding the guilty and get maximum punishment for that person for killing an Expecting Elephant so brutally. That person needs to be tried in all the neighboring states too for that coward act. Wild animals have no territories. It migrates to neighboring Tamil Nadu,Karnataka and UT. So cases must be booked in all these states and try that guilty in all these states.

Hope Animal lovers and environment enthusiasts join to create a forum, to make lives of these wild animals secure hereafter.

Brother, why polities the issue. We all want justice for elephants death & I appreciate that central has taken stand on it & insisted state to probe this incident in detail. You know any form of life which carries another life within needs so much care and attention? We humans can at least speak , during lock down people migrate & face difficulty is different issue not linked with elephant death. You are simply diverting from the topic.

Sir this has nothing to do with any political party. This is animal brutality done by some people and if our animal laws were as strong as the other nations those would be behind bars long time age. They deserve to be charged for murder of 2. That poor elephant was asking food for it's child and in the end got killed
