Dharwad: Hubballi to boast of world's longest railway platform soon

Daijiworld Media Network - Dharwad (SP)

Dharwad, Jun 5: The railway station at Hubballi, known as the commercial capital of Karnataka, will soon be able to boast of having the longest railway platform in the world.

The first platform in the railway station here is 550 metres long. Its length is being increased to 1,400 metres. Its width will be 10 metres. The current inspection carriage route will be converted into a full-scale platform. Works on these aspects have already begun and they are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Currently, the 1,366 metre-long platform at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where the head office of the north-eastern railway is located, gets credit for being the longest railway platform in the world. The platform at Hubballi will relegate this platform to the second spot.

The doubling of Hubballi-Bengaluru railway line is in progress and apart from completing this work, the total number of platforms in Hubballi will be increased to eight from the current five. A new entrance will be initiated to the station at Gadag Road. A total amount of Rs 90 crore is being spent on these projects and once completed, the commercial capital will be adding another feather to its illustrious cap.

On May 1, the Indian government launched Shramik Special trains to ferry migrant labourers who were stranded across the country, amid the coronavirus lockdown. But, new data from India’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) shows that around 80 people have died, on board these trains, between May 9 and May 27.

World's longest railway platform but unable to manage the migrant transportation resulting in more than 80 deaths in coaches due to exhaustion in simmering heat above 47°c lack of water and food.

If a train bound for Gorakhpur reaches Raurkela in Odisha and another one going to Patna reaches Purulia, there must be something very ‘special’ about these Shramik Specials. And if jobless labourers are reaching their hometowns on wheels, instead of walking hundreds of kilometers, is being considered something special in 21st century India, then indeed, railway minister Piyush Goyal must be felicitated for this grand feat.

But in this lockdown, trains are getting lost and people are arriving dead. Is this called BJP's disaster management or achivement?

It is the failure of State Govt particularly Mah, RAJ to send the labourers without any arrangements. Apex court clearly said it is the responsibility of the State Govt to look after the migrant Labour who wish to return. Death may be due to many reasons. In normal time minimum 50 ppl die in train travelling. In spite of providing so many trains Mah Govt failed to arrange as per rule the migrant labourers. Who is to blame? Now same Govt want reverse "shramik spl" to bring back the labourers? Why Indian Railway should bear the expenses. Let the State Govt who want laboueres make their own arrangements. Railways is not for free service as and when require.

Sir, Late Prime Minister V.P. Singh never even considered charging the Indians stuck in Kuwait in 1990 for no fault of their own. Not only is Modi charging Indians stranded abroad by COVID-19 but also the millions of poor trapped by his lockdown decision.
If government can't provide free services then even Amarnath Yatra should not be free.

That is the difference between the leadership having compulsion to the citizens of India.

Can anyone enlighten me on the progress of the doubling track work of Bangalore Mumbai railway line. As far as I know this project has been making progress like tortoise walk.A super fast train between two major cities would go a long in solving the endless troubles of travellers between two cities.
