Mark my words, India will be in top-10 in 2028 Olympics: Rijiju

New Delhi, Jun 8 (IANS): Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that preparations are already underway with respect to the country targetting a top-10 finish at the 2028 Olympics.

India have historically underwhelmed at the multi-national event, as far as medals are concerned. In the last edition of the Olympics in Rio, Indian athletes returned home with just two medals -- PV Sindhu (silver) and Sakshi Malik (bronze) -- finishing 67th on the table.

The country has never managed to breach the double-digit mark with highest being six at London Olympics in 2012 -- two silvers and four bronze medals.

Despite such numbers, Rijiju said the country will be targetting a record medal haul at the 2028 Olympics. Pinning hopes on junior athletes, he also said that the whole country will witness the progress at 2024 Olympics.

"The 2024 Games is mid-term goal but the long term is 2028. When I became sports minister I had very limited talents, potential Olympic medalists," Rijiju said during a live Instagram session with Commonwealth gold medallist Manika Batra.

"In 2024, we will have a potential team which can get us maximum medals. But in 2028 I've made my mind very clear we have to be in top-10. And I'm not saying just like that. Our preparation has started."

"Junior athletes are our future champions, we have started our preparation in a solid way. We will see results in 2024 and will make rapid progress. But mark my words, India will be in top-10 in 2028."

Words of bragging are not enough to win Olympic medals. Need a lot of investment in talents which can come from any corner of the country, professional coaching centers at national, state and district levels, elevation of imporatnce of olympic events to the level Cricket is though it has has no international significance, financial support for the aspiring athletes etc etc. The sports minister and the government of course have no idea what that all means.

This is what happens when you appoint incompetent person as sports minister. Has he ever played any game or participated in any sports? what does he know about sports. Simply blabbering something and forecasting what is going to happen 8 years from now is called as loose talk.

Modi in a 2013 speech had said that even our Army Jawans can get 5-10 medals. Did not see anything as such as yet.

May be he thought Olympic Medals are for Sale or bring by hook or crook just like EVMs.

Now Kiren Riju says we will be in Top 10 by 2028.

In 2016 Olympics Australia was at 10th position with 8 Gold medals. India getting even 2 golds is a distant dream.

India's ex-medal holders work as coconut sellers or housemaid. If this is the future, I don't think anybody will come forward to participate in sports. Where is the money reserved for sports going ? Why can't the ex-medal holders be given a job in a field of their expertise ? Or a small stipend so that they can sustain on their own ?

Dream big. It doesn't cost money.
