Bengaluru: In pursuit of fancy mobile number, engineer loses Rs 64,000

Bengaluru, Jun 9: Cyber thieves who sent an SMS to the mobile phone number of a civil engineer offering to provide him a fancy mobile number, succeeded in siphoning off Rs 64,000 from him.

A 51-year-old engineer living at Chinnaswamy Modaliar Road here, received a message to his phone number on May 19 informing that Airtel Platinum number, 90999 99999 was for sale. The engineer who desired to get this unique number, called the mobile phone number from where he got the message.

The person at the other end sent him an invoice, seeking payment of Rs 64,900. The engineer trusted the person and made payment of this amount online. When he called this number for his SIM card, he did not get response.

At last, he contacted Airtel helpline and got confirmation that no such sale of SIM card was organized by the company. The engineer, who realized that he had been duped, has now filed a complaint at the police station.

    Anonymous , Udupi, asks what is the need for a fancy number!
    If that logic is applied, no one should seek better house, better looking car, better place, fancy wedding, fancy anything. Preferably just be -normal, lest be termed as fool, just because someone like or prefers something attractive. , better ? After all all phones have tring tring hello hello facilities! Those who agree with fool are also fools.
    Why people go for expensive phones? Rs. 20,000 phone may have all facilities that a Rs. 60,000/= phone has.
    So, bye the way, do not be FOOLED BY sending money online without being sure of who is the service provider.company. Otherwise, fancy house, special vehicle numbers, phone numbers are individual's right that does not make them fools.

    What is the necessity of having a fancy number at present, as our calls are recognised by name and nobody bothers to memorize numbers? Probably, this guy is a government engineer who gets lots of easy money. If he spent this amount to help the poor migrants, he would have been blessed by God.

    The engineer who lost Rs 64,000 is solely responsible for his stupidity. Being an educated man, he should know what is happening in this world. There are many cyber thieves who are looking for prey like him.

    I dont know why police cant search the person. Money went online and to some account. cant they search account number address phone number address

    Police are bound to their state. They have no authority outside the state.

    Organsing a visit to another state is procedurally complex!

    Plus, it costs a fair bit for the department to send some policemen out of the state for several days.

    So, nothing comes out of the complaint.

    By the time investigation reaches the state of bank account and details it will be 6 to 8 weeks, enough time to prepare rescue. Crooks know that it is long procedure unless a police officer is duped! Success rate of nabbing such criminals says it all!
