Puttur, Feb 5: The demolition of unauthorized petty shops that had sprang up recently in the heart of Uppinangady town, near here was successfully held on Wednesday February 3, in the presence of taluk panchayat officers.

Uppinangady town was cleared of unauthorized structures by the then Assistant commissioner Vasant Kumar, two years ago; as a result ample parking space was available and also the pedestrians could walk freely.

Since then, a few unauthorized petty shops began springing up in the main streets; while lately many such shops began to do business in the city’s main bus stand, mainly due to the stiff competitions among the shopkeepers themselves.

As the demolition squad arrived along with police security, majority of unauthorized petty shopkeepers at the city’s bus stand vacated their wares and makeshift accessories.  The encroachments of streets by the full-fledged shopkeepers were also demolished during the operation. The zilla panchayat officials spared a chicken stall located at the bank of Netravati River, since it was functioning legally, despite the pressure from a few locals.

Taluk panchayat expansion officer Madhu Kumar, revenue inspector Sridhar, gram panchayat secretary Gerald Mascarenhas and others were involved in the demolition operations.

Uppinangady police provided security during the demolition.
