Karwar, Jun 11: A person from Konkanakoppa in Sahasralli village in Yellapur taluk, who reportedly had renounced all the worldly pleasures, having been suffering from ill health, immolated himself by creating a pyre and jumping into the blazing fire.

The person in question, Shivaram Ramakrshna Hegde (60), who chose one of the most painful forms of ending life, was a farmer by profession. He had been suffering from cancer since sometime. His wife had died two years back due to ill health. He was going through a lot of mental agony on these issues. He was very much religiously inclined, and had renounced all worldly pleasures, it is said.

On Tuesday evening, he heaped firewood in a corner of his field. Before jumping into the pyre, it was seen that he had hung his clothes and other things to a nearby tree. In a slip recovered from the spot, he was found to have written that he had decided to offer himself to fire as he understands that human life is temporary and transient. He also quoted some lines from religious scriptures.

His close ones said that Hegde had of late been leaning towards philosophy and developed aversion for worldly things. He had a good relationship with people. He was fed up by the cancer which was making him suffer.

Hegde's was a small family. The family was into agriculture. He was living with an elder brother, sister-in-law, son, daughter-in-law and a grandson. He had married off his only daughter a few years back.

A case in this connection was registered at Yellapur police station.
