High fuel taxes hurting common man: Congress

New Delhi, Jun 13 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday said despite the international crude oil prices being at their lowest in the last 15 years, the petrol and diesel prices in the country are skyrocketing.

Former Union Minister Kapil Sibal said at a press conference that Central excise duty on petrol has been increased by 258% and on diesel by 819% since the Modi government came to power in May 2014. "The common man is affected most by such high taxes," he said.

The Congress said instead of passing the benefit of lower crude prices to the consumers, petrol, diesel prices were hiked for the 7th straight day on June 13. Petrol has now become 59-61 paise costlier, while diesel prices have gone up by 50-60 paise in major cities across the country.

The party alleged that the government is pocketing money at the cost of consumers. According to a report by Care Ratings, the hike effectively meant that the Central government is collecting around 270 per cent taxes on the base price of petrol and 256 per cent in the case of diesel.

According to analysts, the gain for the Union government in the remaining 11 months of the current fiscal year (April 2020 to March 2021) will be close to

Rs 1.6 lakh crore. Together with Rs 39,000 crore in annual revenues gained from the March 14 excise duty hike of Rs 3 per litre each on petrol and diesel, the government stands to gain as much as Rs 2 lakh crore.

In May 2012, when petrol prices were hiked by steepest Rs 7.54 a litre, Narendra Modi had called it a failure of UPA government. Today, petrol is the costliest in India in all of South Asia.
Here is the Twitter thread"Massive hike in #petrol prices is a prime example of the failure of Congress-led UPA. This will put a burden of hundreds of crores on Guj."-7:54 AM · May 23, 2012·

Rising prices including those of petrol and diesel were among the reasons that brought down the UPA government of Manmohan Singh, whom the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had described as a "Sardar (chief), who is not asardar (effective)".

At current costs, India has the highest retail prices of petrol and diesel among South Asian nations. Taxes account for half of the pump rates for each litre of petrol and diesel. There is demand for bringing petrol and diesel under GST. If it happens petrol may be available less than Rs 25 a litre.

Fuel prices have been Modi govt’s go-to cash cow.
    1. Is PM Modi government signing the will of its own 'failure'?
    2. Why the benefit of low oil prices is not passed to the citizens of India?
    3. Why the government is selling less than the retail price to the neighboring countries of India?
    4. Where is the Rs 20 lakh crores collected from the exercise duty gone?

Subject is on the fuel prices but Andhbhakts will not speak about that. They will comment on Congress, elections and mock Rahul Gandhi.

They have lost the thinking power completely and are not able to understand the problems with common man. This government is spineless and busy in political activities than governance.

When opposition party talk about the impact of price rise on common people why anybody should get annoyed? Is it not the fact?

Highest by any country in the world, were taxes are high as 275 percent on petrol. Just fooling people by telling lies in the month of April when crude prices had gone to the lowest ever, the Government didi not reduce petrol and diesel prices The excuse was the purchase of oil in April's contract the reduction of petrol and diesel will be reduced after two months, but now after two months still the price of petrol and diesel not reduced but increased. This government is only a bag fool of lies.
