Sad day for India-Nepal relations: Congress

New Delhi, Jun 14 (IANS): On a day Nepal's Lower House of Parliament unanimously passed a constitution amendment bill to reflect its new map in the national emblem, the Congress on Saturday dubbed the development a "sad day" in the longstanding bilateral relations.

"A sad day in the longstanding Indo-Nepal relationship. Tragic that self-professed strong leadership of the BJP remains in ostrich-like denial when it comes to protecting national interest," Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a statement.

The approved map includes Indian areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura in the Himalayan country.

The Congress also attacked the Modi government and said that the "delusional TV warfare can't substitute mature political leadership."

Earlier, Nepal Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali tweeted: "The House of Representatives unanimously adopted the constitutional amendment bill, paving the way for accommodating the updated political-administrative map in the national emblem."

On June 9, Nepal's House of Representative had unanimously endorsed the bill to adopt a new map of the country.

The proposal was backed by Nepal Communist Party headed by Prime Minister K.P. Oli, the opposition Nepali Congress, and Madhesi-based parties.

I hope the muffs in the BJP will not blame Nehruji for this mess in Nepal. NDA government under Modi is the worst which India has ever seen. They are at loggerheads with every neighbour - Bangla, Nepal, Pakistan, China etc. I don't know why Bhutan is spared?

Just imagine what will be the fate of a family which is at loggerheads with their neighbours around their house. It is chaos, lack of peace, fear, anxiety, wasteful expenditure for building up security, and loss of reputation in the locality. This is what is happening to the image of India internationally.

Dialogue and a friendly attitude are what is expected of a big brother towards its neighbours.
For this, you need people who are educated at the helm of affairs.

After the death of previous king the communists have taken over Nepal, so their affiliation towards China is obvious. Communists though driven out of the entire Europe and broke up Russia, always want to rule the entire world and never give up efforts towards that end. So what happened in Nepal is NOT india's foreign policy failure and so no reset is required.Simply currently the communist Nepal wants toe the Chinese commuist line and agenda.

Irrespective of the party in government today, this was supposed to happen. Congress ignored Nepal and did not provide any support to the King against the up rise of barbaric communists. Once communists have taken over, their loyalty is to China. This would have happened even if Rahul Gandhi was our PM now!!

    Shankar,

Irrespective of the party in government today, this was supposed to happen.....

How can you say this? This has happened because of weak foreign policy. In an attempt to pamper Trump and US, this government completely forgot the neighbours. This paradigm shift in the foreign policy allowed China to take advantage and make their position strong with the neighbouring countries.

Now supporters of Modi are coming out with the theory that this ought to happen whoever is in the power. Not ready to accept the failure of foreign policy and blame it on communists of Nepal and earlier Congress Government.

Why are we squarely targeted by our immediate Neighbouring countries! China is a main threat and so is Pakistan, all nuclear capable powers. Now, Nepal is a new headache.

A war with any country at this juncture is not viable as economy of our county is nosediving since 2014, plus the outbreak of the pandemic.

    God save our nation.

Nepal is very small & poor country and does not have Air force, Navy & Large Industry and commerce. We are powerful country with imported French & Russian fighter jets & guns. Let the Prime minister Modi declare war with Nepal and send the Indian Gurkha Regiment Army to reclaim the Indian areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura. Jai Hind.

The Congress party cultivated good relationship with Nepal - India's most trustworthy and dependable neighbour.

In fact the most praised of the soldiers in the India army come from Nepal: the Gurkhas.

But the current leadership does not want to learn from history.

Now Nepal will be pampered by China - which is already building highways and rail tracks to Nepal.
