Sonia demands rollback of fuel prices, writes to Modi

New Delhi, Jun 16 (IANS): Congress President Sonia Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded that fuel prices should be slashed as crude prices have fallen across the world.

"I see no logic in why the Government would even consider such a price increase at a time when the economic impact of Covid-19 is depriving millions of jobs and livelihood, devastating business big and small, rapidly eroding the income of the middle class, even as farmers are struggling to sow the crop for the Kharif season," wrote Sonia Gandhi.

The letter comes in the wake of fuel prices recorded eighth consecutive hike on Sunday, taking the total increase since the resumption of the dynamic price revision system to more than Rs 5 per litre.

Sonia wrote in the letter, "I urge you to rollback this increase and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the citizens of this country."

Sonia Gandhi said, she is "deeply distressed" that in these exceedingly difficult times since the beginning of March, the Government has taken the wholly insensitive decision to increase petrol and diesel prices on no less than ten separate occasions.

The Congress President alleged that the Government is seeking to earn an additional revenue of nearly Rs 2,60,000 crore by these ill-advised hikes in excise duty and increase in the petrol and diesel prices.

Sonia in her letter said, "It is a matter of record that despite historically low oil prices over the last six years your government's revenues have been massively enriched by the cumulative increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel on twelve different occasions (by an additional Rs 23.78 per litre on petrol and Rs 28.37 on diesel).

This translates into a 258 per cent increase in excise on petrol and 820 per cent hike in excise duty on diesel yielding in these six years a staggering Rs 18,00,000 crore from excise collection on petrol and diesel alone.

"If ever there was a time to deploy these resources in the service of the people, it is now,"said Sonia.

Perhaps PM Modi's India is the only country in the world were fuel prices are raised for the eight consecutive days and 13 times exercise duty since the government came to power.

In May 2012, when petrol prices were hiked by steepest Rs 7.54 a litre, Narendra Modi had called it a failure of UPA government. Today, petrol is the costliest in India in all of South Asia.

Massive hike in #petrol prices is a prime example of the failure of Congress-led UPA. This will put a burden of hundreds of crores on Guj.--7:54 AM · May 23, 2012·

Now with the base price at just Rs18, Indians now pay 275% in taxes to government on every liter of fuel being sold in retail market. Interestingly this 'PM Care' government in RTI reply on exports claims that India is exporting refined petrol to 15 nations at Rs 34 per litre while refined diesel is exported to 29 countries at Rs 37 per litre as per the information provided.

    1. If there is deficit in the budget that has been fulfilled by RBI, then where did the 20 lakh crores of taxes collected has gone?
    2. How much revenue from the taxation has been shared with each state of India?
    3. Why the benefit of lower prices like other neighboring countries is not shared with Indians?
    4. How did government manage to export the fuel less than the retail price sold for Indians?

It is "economically anti-national" to fleece Indians of Rs 1.4 lakh crore by raising taxes on petrol and Diesel.

You rightly said, she should have sat on dharna with cylinders, utensils, brooms etc instead of writing to Modi for fuel price hike.

Train tickets were for those who walked to hundreds of Km to reach their houses. Petrol prices is for those who clapped when Modi said 'Lootaa... Lootaa...' If you guys really wanted cheaper prices, you guys would not have enticed by him when he said '15 Lakh ke hisaab se jamaa hai - mein laoonga... 100 din ke andar laaoongaa...'

Vote for Modi again. Don't complain. Congress did not give you petrol for this high rates, BJP is giving !
