Modi govt remained mute spectator on Chinese transgression: Congress

New Delhi, Jun 16 (IANS): Asserting that there could be no compromises on national security, the Congress on Tuesday accused the Modi government of remaining a "mute spectator" to the Chinese transgressions into Indian territory at three points in Ladakh since April-May 2020.

"The Modi government has remained a mute spectator," the party said in a statement issued by its spokespersons Randeep Singh Surjewala after reports of the killing of three Indian personnel by the Chinese Army in the Galwan Valley area a day earlier.

"There can be no compromises on India's security and territorial integrity. Reports of Chinese Army moving thousands of troops in the Galwan Valley and Pangong Tso lake area (Ladakh) has shocked the entire nation as an audacious attempt on our territorial integrity," the statement added.

The Congress also questioned the government "silence" on the issue and echoed party senior leader AK Antony, a former Defence Minister, to demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh come forward and tell the country about the stand-off with China.

"The two have repeatedly maintained an intriguing silence on the occupation of Indian territory by the Chinese since April-May 2020. The Congress demands that the PM now come forward to tell the nation as to how the government proposes to meet this challenging situation, which has serious ramifications for national security and territorial integrity," the Congress added.

"The Congress remains firm that the entire country stands as one to protect India's national security and territorial integrity at all costs. Let the Modi government remember that in our parliamentary democracy, secrecy or silence are unacceptable on part of our government," the party said.

The Congress said that not a single battle casualty among Indian soldiers had occurred on the India-China Line of Actual Control in the over four decades.

S.Kamath, Mumbai, you are parroting like those who worship politicians. Modiji is not going to the war front. China and Pak too have nukes. Kargil war took place during whose government? I fully agree Congress should not take advantage of the volatile situation. But let us not boast of about Modi. Chine won't care whether it is Modi or Manhohan Singh. They relay on their superior military and weapons. Pak will take advantage fighting a proxy war. Nepal will watch the drama. Whole world is not in favour of Modi, rest assured Rameshanna.

Developments at the border is worrisome and PM need to show his leadership. Loosing of our soldiers during negotiation with China is just not acceptable. This is a crucial period and PM need to take everybody in confidence but unfortunately his ego is not allowing him to do so. Leader should be always a symbol of unity but in case of Modi this quality is completely missing.

It is his responsibility to protect the people of the country and he should instill the confidence with the people by having dialogues with all political parties and the important personalities. He also need to address the nation and inform them our preparedness in the event of the worst situation.

When in opposition he was the one making fun of the ruling party them and now it is his turn to show his leadership.

The Chinese know very well that our country is grossly mismanaged & our economy is in doldrums.

We cannot afford to go for a war, looks like they came well prepared & our soldiers were taken by surprise. The figure of 20 is also doubtful.
The army top brass should have actively involved in guiding & assessing the ground situation when friction was building up.
My heartfelt condolences to all the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our noble country.

While the two sides have had several standoffs along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) over the past four decades, the last time Indian soldiers lost their lives due to border dispute with China was in 1975.

The body language in the picture shows who is in control, and who is not.

Regardless, if the top man is mute, the rest of the Government will also be mute.

That is what the voters must understand at all times.

Photoshopped images do not help when dealing with external parties.

    Dr Kamath,

I agree with you that India should de-escalate the standoff with Chinese under the present conditions. But how can we allow to loose our soldiers during this process? What dares them to kill our soldiers? There is something amiss in the ability of our government in the negotiation process.

Congress is the opposition party and it will highlight the mistakes of this government. Please see the old videos of Modi mocking Congress even during a small skirmish at the borders. He used to talk big but today we can see his failure in every field.

Weakest PM of India so far.
