Gunfight on between security forces, ultras in J&K's Shopian


Srinagar, Jun 20 (IANS): A gunfight started on Saturday between the security forces and several militants holed up in a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police sources said.

A team of police, Rashtriya Rifles and Central Reserve Police Force had launched a cordon-and-search operation in Lakadpora Pudsoo village after information about the presence of militants there.

"As the security forces closed in on the hiding militants, the latter fired shots, triggering an encounter that is going on," the sources said.

Reports said two to three militants are hiding in the village.

So far, 22 militants have been killed in Shopian district in five encounters this month.
