Striker Piatek praises Hertha's team spirit

Warsaw, Jun 21 (IANS): Hertha Berlin's Polish forward Krzysztof Piatek said his side defended very well and showed great team spirit, after Bruno Labbadia's men beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at home in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Brazil's Matheus Cunha put the hosts ahead with his fifth goal in just his 10th Bundesliga game with 22 minutes on the clock, reports Xinhua news agency.

In the 54th minute, Piatek dribbled past Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky before unselfishly squaring for Dodi Lukebakio to tap home from close range.

"It was a difficult game against a good team. We defended well, showed team spirit and created many opportunities. We defended more in the first half, the second half was more offensive. Victory is important," Piatek was quoted as saying by the official Hertha site.

The Pole also commented on his assist. "Before the second goal I was in a good position and I wanted to shoot, but Dodi did it directly. However, the three points are the most important thing," added the striker, while coach Labbadia claimed that "the second goal belongs 99 percent to Piatek."

Returning to winning ways after three consecutive defeats. Hertha now sit 10th in the 18-team Bundesliga with 41 points.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day Spanish LaLiga side Real Betis sacked coach Joan Francesc "Rubi" Ferrer, as per a BBC report.

After just three matches into the resumption of league which was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rubi was asked to step down.
